Anne Catherine Ober Frey, aged 84, of Stanfordville, NY, died on Saturday, December 8, 2012. Anne was born in Buffalo, NY on August 9, 1928, to Edwin Hardy Ober, M.D., and Edith Lowe Ober. She grew up in Painted Post, NY, graduated from Painted Post High School and Mount Holyoke College, and married John "Jack" Sebastian Frey of Corning, NY. They had five children and had been married for 59 years when Jack died in 2011.
Anne was a multi-talented person with an irrepressible enthusiasm for life. She passionately loved nature and animals and raised bloodhounds, Scottish deerhounds and Connemara ponies. She enjoyed horseback riding, birdwatching and beagling with the Sandanona Hare Hounds of Millbrook, NY. She was one of the first people to import Connemara ponies from Ireland, and was a member and Honorary Advisor of the Connemara Pony Society, which awarded her the Society's Crestwood Service Award in 2005. She composed songs and wrote poetry, stories and risque limericks. A full member of the American Academy of Equine Art, Anne was an accomplished artist whose bronze sculptures of dogs and horses were exhibited in Paris, Saratoga Springs, Lexington, and many other cities.
Anne is survived by her children, Catherine (Thomas) Murphy of Norwich, NY, Peter Frey of Danbury, CT, Christopher (Eszter Samodai) Frey of Amston, CT, Elizabeth Frey of Olympia, WA, and Nathaniel (Kathryn) Frey of Sherman, CT, her grandchildren Caleb (Kate) Murphy, Laura Murphy, Lucas Murphy, Olivia Frey, Trevor Frey, Alexander Frey, Ana Frey and Julia Frey, and great-grandson James Murphy. She is also survived by her sister Mary Ellen Andrews, brother James (Rosemarie) Ober, sister-in-law Jocelyn (William) Ober and several nieces, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her brother William Ober, her brother-in-law Richard Andrews, and her nephew William E. Ober.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Celebration on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the community room of the United Church of Christ, 5928 State Route 82, Stanfordville, NY. Contributions in Anne's memory may be made to the Michael Canty Memorial Fund, honoring a nephew of Anne and Jack's whose life was lost on September 11, 2001, at: c/o Ed and Kay Canty, 719 Hampton Ave., Schenectady NY 12309.
