On April 14, 2019, the world lost a great man, who spent his 87 years living life to the fullest. Carl John Marrone was born on January 27, 1932 in Roosevelt, Long Island to Gaspare and Agnes (Butera). As a child, he was an avid sports fan and participant. He also loved to build model planes and built an actual plane with his brother in their basement. He graduated from East Hempstead High School in 1951 and then enlisted in the Navy. He spent four years fixing planes on an aircraft carrier while seeing parts of the world such as Africa, Hawaii, Italy, Spain, Greece and many more.
Following the Navy, Carl decided to follow his father’s example and became a barber. He went to the M. Louis Hair Design Institute in Queens, NY where he met Dorothy Stevens (the hairdressing license was an added bonus). They were married on August 30, 1959 in Uniondale, New York. He opened a beauty shop in Great Neck, Long Island. Together, he and Dottie were blessed to have and raise four wonderful children together spending weekends on Shelter Island.
Carl also loved to take the family on vacation and hunt in Chenango County. In 1975, he decided to trade in the busy city life for the peace and tranquility of Trestle Lake and made permanent residence in Oxford. After commuting back and forth to Long Island each week, Carl decided it was time to open up his own beauty salon in Sidney, New York. He ran Carl’s Place for over 30 years and continued to cut, style and perm hair at customers’ homes and in his own home until recently.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and sports nut. He would stay up late into the night watching the Knicks, Mets, Giants or Rangers (depending on the season). He had an extensive movie and music collection and sang Frank Sinatra songs daily. But the best part of Carl was that his number one priority was always family. He was the ultimate Italian, hosting spaghetti dinner for his entire family each Sunday (the more sauce the better). He loved watching his grandchildren play sports, teaching them how to hunt and fish and he relished in spending time with his great-grandchildren. He was witty, funny, complimentary and sweet; the perfect combination to make the best “Papa who Cuts Hair.”
Carl was predeceased by his mother and father, his sister Connie, his brother Vincent and his beloved daughter Susan. He is survived by his loving wife Dottie, his sons Steven and Michael and daughter Dianne, his grandchildren Melissa (Michael) Chrystie, Jessica (Mark) Fish, Bronson Marrone, Jeremy Nelson, Michaela Marrone (Greg Brewer), Carly Marrone, Jacob Marrone, Dylan Conklin, and his great-grandchildren Jaden Moore, Cooper, Carter and Maggie Chrystie and Johnsy Fish. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law Christine and several nieces and nephews.
A service and luncheon will be held at 11 am on Saturday, May 4th at the American Legion in Oxford. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Susan Marrone Nelson Scholarship Fund (P.O. Box 192 Oxford, NY 13830) in Carl’s honor.
