Carroll L. Smith

Carroll L. Smith, 78, of Sherburne, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 16. Carroll was born in Otselic to the late Donald and Mildred Smith. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Donald Smith, Llewellyn Smith, John Smith, Mary Bennett, and Linda Springer. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Margaret; his daughter, Paula and Albert Ray, Jr.; his grandson, Tyler Ward and Jennifer McCarthy; his granddaughter, Tori and Thomas Coles; his great-grandchildren, Skyler Ward, Trent Coles, Triston Coles, Charlie Ward, Taylor McCarthy, Erin McCarthy, Jordan McCarthy, Ava Williams, and Colson Brush; his sister, Harriet Leigh; and his brothers, Everette Smith, and Calvin Smith. Carroll lived his life in Chenango County and made his living at Ford Homes as well as Chenango County Fairgrounds and the county highway department, retiring after 36 years of service. He built two homes in North Pharsalia and one in Tennessee. Carroll loved farming and working with his work horses, Max and Mike, tinkering in his garage, visiting with friends and spending time at his lake house. Carroll’s family wishes to thank his caregivers, Ivory Henderson, Jada Gonzalez, and Jennifer Anderson for their kindness during his illness. Funeral services will take place at 5:00 pm on Friday, February 19, at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. with Pastor Jason Sayles officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 3:00 until the time of service. Burial will take place in the spring at Sherburne Quarter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carroll’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society at donate3.cancer.org

My heart is so saddened with the loss of Uncle Carroll. He was one of the good guys. He loved his family - had a great sense of humor and I will never forget his laugh! He will be missed dearly!

TO PAULA AND AL RAY AND FAMILIES
AS YOU ARE AWARE HARRIETT AND I ARE GOOD FRIENDS AND LOSING ANOTHER BROTHER IS HARD FOR HER AS ONLY SHE AND 2 BROTHERS ARE LEFT IN THE SMITH FAMILY. I HAD ONLY MET YOUR FATHER A COUPLE OF TIMES, HE WAS QUITE THE CHARACTER AND DID NOT DESERVE THE LONG BATTLE HE HAD WITH CANCER. AT LEAST NOW HE IS AT PEACE AND TIME HEALS ALL BUT REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD TIMES AND REST HE IS NOW WITH PARENTS AND HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHO HAVE PASSED AWAY BEFORE HIM.
