David C. Law, 76, a lifelong resident of Norwich, Community Leader, former Town of Norwich Supervisor and a 57 year member of the Maydole Hose Co. passed away Monday afternoon, February 11, 2019, at the Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
Dave was born on March 23, 1942 in Norwich. He was the son of Carl and Loretta (Frink) Law. He attended the Norwich schools and graduated with the class of 1961.
David’s devotion and community spirit was never ending. He was extremely active in the community and Chenango County. He was a coach for boy’s “pee-wee” Basketball at the YMCA and for Valley Heights Christian Academy. He served as president of the Norwich High School Band Parents where his responsibilities included fund raising, chaperoning and traveling to support band trips. Dave and former band director, Bill Spang, were instrumental in starting the “Fall Festival of Bands”.
David served on the school board for the City of Norwich Schools as well as for Valley Heights Christian Academy. His goal was to provide the best education for the students and the community.
Over the years, he loved playing the part of Santa Clause in the Norwich area. Starting in the W.T. Grant store in the upper plaza with the help of the late Anne Yesko, together they arranged for Santa to arrive by helicopter, fire truck and horses. They also arranged for many children to have Saturday morning “Breakfast with Santa”. His work as Santa continued for the Norwich Merchant’s Association where he walked the streets of Norwich greeting shoppers. David’s final years as Santa where in the East Park inside the igloo. Additionally as Santa he did many private parties including the Chenango County Museum, the Chenango Valley Home and the Norwich Evening Sun party at Fred’s Inn.
David ALWAYS loved a parade! David worked with former Fire Chief John Tigue, Dick Snyder and the late Linda Green to form the annual Parade of Lights. They worked tirelessly to organize the parade and make sure everyone enjoyed the spirit of Christmas. In July of 1976, David chaired the Bicentennial Parade. Also, on the Norwich Fire Department Steamer, he played the part of Pumpy the Clown, marching in all of their parades. The parade he enjoyed the most was the New York City Macy’s Parade, where he chaperoned the Norwich High School Band.
David joined the Calvary Baptist Church at the age of 14, so he could play softball. He was the pitcher, catcher and umpire and played into his 50’s. David established and grew in his relationship with Jesus Christ at Calvary. Over his life he was very active in the Calvary Baptist Church. He served as deacon, trustee, youth leader, and a Sunday school teacher. He was also very instrumental in the move and construction of the building from Birdsall Street to the present location on Calvary Drive.
David joined the Maydole Hose Company of the Norwich Fire Department In the fall of 1961. In his later years he served as a local fire police. His service as a fireman was 57 years.
David worked at Chenango Union Printing. Then he worked for Chenango County as the county’s printer for 27 years. He retired from this position and was a records management officer for the county until the department closed.
David served as a Supervisor for the Town of Norwich. Thanks to the voters of Norwich he served in this position for 12 years. It was his pleasure to serve the Town of Norwich and Chenango County. David also served as a Chenango County Agricultural Society Fair Director. Some of his accomplishments during this time include events at the Chenango County Fair such as the entertainment tent, senior citizens day, and the fireman’s parade.
On May 4, 1963, at the Calvary Baptist Church, he married Virginia Anderson, who survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael D. (Jill) Law, of Melborne, FL, Anne-Marie (Mark) St. John of NYC, and Mark C. Law (David) of Chicago, ILL. Also surviving are his grandchildren Jonathan, Joshua, Tara, Allison, and McKay St. John, Kristen and Clint (Grant) Wetzel, and Anderson Law. Additionally, he is survived by his Aunt Betty Frink, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by grandchildren Spencer and Madison Law.
A funeral service for David will be held on Friday, February 15th, 11:00am at Calvary Baptist Church, Norwich, NY. Interment will be at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday, February 14th from 4-7 pm. Members of the Maydole Hose Co. and Norwich Fire Dept. will call in a group at 6:45pm.
