Edward F. Troicke, 93, of Norwich, died on April 8, 2024 at the NYS Veteran’s Home in Oxford. Ed is well known to our area as a locksmith, a business he began in the 1970’s, expanded in the 1980’s and became a full time business/hobby in his retirement.
Ed was born in Rochester, NY to the late Ulrich and Evelyn (Bloomfield) Troicke. From an early age, Ed was intrigued with science. His lifelong hobbies were learning and teaching, playing any brass instrument as well as being an avid train buff. While raising his sons and assisting with the care of his nieces and nephews, Ed worked nights as he earned a general studies degree from the University of Rochester. He was working at Bausch and Lomb when he was offered an opportunity to teach at Broome Technical College in Binghamton which he accepted. Ed taught in the Electrical Engineering department and during the 1980’s began instructing computer programming as well. He enjoyed anything technical and had or created many “gadgets”. Through Broome, his locksmithing and personal interests, he would consult with various businesses around the country and provided trainings. He retired from then-named Broome Community College in 1985 and worked as an adjunct professor for several years.
Ed served in the Nave Reserve in Rochester and in 1950, he entered the US Air Force. Ed trained and worked as a nuclear technician, serving in Mississippi, New Mexico, Colorado and Morrocco. In September 1952, he married Gladys Tucker. He was active with the Locksmith Association, The Optimist Club, IEEE, The United Methodist Church of McDonough, various administrative positions during his years of volunteering in McDonough and was active with the Oxford and Norwich Community bands. He and his young family enjoyed many camping trips, including many out west. Later, in his retirement, he enjoyed traveling about the US and Europe with his second wife, Elinor (Robb).
Ed is survived by his sons, Wayne (Pat), of Ft. Fairfield, ME, Clifford (Pat), of Tullahoma, TN, and Norman (Deb), of Lisle, NY; his daughter, Amy Baldwin, of Norwich; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wives, Gladys and Elinor; his son Martin; his brothers, Frederick and Arthur; and his dear friend, Phil Bedford.
Ed’s family wishes to thank the staff at the NYS Veteran’s Home at Oxford for their loving and compassionate care, especially the team on Spruce Neighborhood, who treated Dad like family. A special shout out to the Honor Guard and other veterans at the facility, who gave him an honorable farewell.
Calling hours and memorial service for Ed will take place at R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 N. Broad St. Norwich on Saturday, April 13, from 5:00-7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
