James Snell, 70, a lifelong Norwich resident passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 22, 2020, at his home. Jim was born on December 17, 1949 in Norwich the son of Franklin D. and Marjorie (Backus) Snell. He grew up in Norwich and was a 1967 graduate of the Norwich High School. In September of 1967 Jim entered the United States Army serving his country during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in September of 1970 when he returned home to begin his working career first with Carl Olson Contracting and eventually to Collier Electric. Jim became a Master Electrician and became employed with Rondout Electric located in Poughkeepsie, NY where he remained for 33 years retiring in October of 2016. Jim was a die hard Yankee fan as well as NASCAR Racing and enjoyed a good softball game. He was also an avid bowler and was a member of the Norwich Bowling Hall of Fame. On April 15, 1972 in Norwich he married Donna Franklin who survives. Besides his wife Donna of Norwich, Jim is survived by his son Scott Snell of Albany, daughter Jill (Eric) Eddy of Norwich and granddaughters Elizabeth and Gabrielle Eddy. Also surviving are his siblings Donna (David) Getsy of SC, Rose Marie (Tom) Rowlison of Norwich, Frederick (Wanda) Snell of TN, Robert (Priscilla) Snell of GA, Donald Snell, brother-in-law David (Joanne) Franklin of PA and sister-in-law Diane (Lauren) Coleman of FL. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Jim was predeceased by his daughter Jamie Lynn, sisters Patricia White, Mary Edholm, Alice Cane and brothers John (Jack) Snell, Charles Snell, Frank Snell and Richard Snell. At Jim’s request there will be no formal services. Burial will be at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Jim’s Life on Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 1-4 pm at the 19 North Main Street Event Center in Sherburne. Jim and I grew up in the same neighborhood - our back yards joined. As kids we all played touch football or baseball, hide/seek, etc. Those were good times. Small world -- his niece and her husband bought my dad's house when he passed in 2002.
