Kenneth E. Scott
August 9, 1926 – June 7, 2018
Kenneth E. (Scotty) Scott passed away June 7th, 2018, two months short of his 92nd birthday. Ken was born August 9, 1926, to Wilber & Ella Scott, the eldest of four children and the oldest son. Friends and family were often treated to “stories” of growing up with 3 sisters and their adventures. Ken enlisted in the navy during World War 2 and was a participant in the Normandy Beach invasion on June 6th 1944 from the LCT 137 on Omaha Beach. Ken married Betty Jean Brookins on June 21, 1945, and celebrated 70 years of marriage prior to Betty’s death in 2014. During their marriage Ken worked briefly at the Acme grocery store in Norwich and later joined his dad at the post office where he became well known to the local community. He could often be found next door at the elks club honing his card playing skills . He played poker up until his death. In 1967 Ken & Betty became owners of the Brown Avenue Bowling Center (NBC) which they ran until retirement. Many local residents grew up at the bowling center and fondly remember Scotty from the school programs he sponsored. Ken’s beloved wife Betty Jean suffered a debilitating stroke at age 65, and he spent the next 22 years caring for her at their home in East McDonough. He referred to the responsibility as an honor and made their lives together as fulfilling as possible under difficult circumstances. Ken is survived by his children Deidra (Dede) Paige, Jeffrey Scott and husband John Wellmann , grandchildren Corey Foote and Melinda Chawgo and husband Tracy. Great grandchildren Chandler and Alex Wehrli, and Alyssa and Ryley Chawgo. His beloved sister Marilyn Gerafalo and nephew Michael (Lavon) Garafalo, Garth , Brett and Brook Bacon and nieces Trudee Bacon and Laurie O’Keefe. He was predeceased by his sister Joan Preston & Marjorie Bacon, and great grandson Bradley Chawgo . Ken will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Everyone who knows him liked him and he was a great guy. Per his request, there will be no formal services or calling hours. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, June 12 at 1 o’clock at Mount Hope Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Norwich VFW at 61 East Main St., Norwich, NY.
