Margaret B. Smith, 76, of Sherburne, passed away very peacefully on Saturday, August 14, 2021, surrounded by her family. Margaret was born in Norwich to the late Clarence and Peggy (King) Sayles. She was also predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Carroll Smith in February of 2021; her siblings, Elma Wright, Florence Hammond, Myrt Angle, and Edwin Sayles. Survivors include her daughter, Paula and Albert Ray, of Sherburne; her grandchildren, Tyler Ward and Jennifer McCarthy; and Tori and Thomas Coles; her great-grandchildren, Skyler Ward, Trent Coles, Triston Coles, Charlie Ward, Taylor McCarthy, Erin McCarthy, Jordan McCarthy, Ava Williams, and Colson Bush; her sisters, Verda Wehner, of Cincinnatus; and Patricia Morse, of Michigan.
Margaret lived her life in East Pharsalia and attended Norwich schools. Following her schooling, Margaret met the love of her life, Carroll Smith and the two were married on November 17, 1962. They started their family and built their home in North Pharsalia where they lived for 42 years before relocating to Sherburne where they had more access to the amenities of living in town. After retirement, Margaret and Carroll spent winters in Tennessee in a home they built there. Eventually, they sold the home in Tennessee and purchased a home on Gorton Lake where they spent many days making repairs and enjoying the lake life that they both loved.
Margaret loved attending services at the East Pharsalia Baptist Church, sewing, making crafts and most of all spending time with her family. She enjoyed her great-grandchildren and every time she saw them, her smile was priceless.
Margaret’s family wishes to thank her caregivers, Ivory Henderson, Jada Gonzalez, Jennifer Anderson and Jasmine Thomas for their kindness during her long illness.
Funeral services for Margaret will take place at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 20, at East Pharsalia Baptist Church, 841 County Road 10, McDonough with Pastor Jason Sayles officiating. She will be laid to rest at Sherburne Quarter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 12:00 pm until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the East Pharsalia Baptist Church.
