Frances Zetes Harwood—our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and role model—passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Fran was the beloved wife of the late Walter E. Harwood, DMD and loving mother of Joan H. Kimball, DMD and her husband Glenn P. Kimball, MD of Haverhill, Linda K. Harwood of Norwood, Edward T. Harwood, and Carol A. Olmstead and her husband Tim Olmstead of Norwood. Fran was also the cherished grandmother of Lauren K. Auger and her husband Chris, Glenn H. Kimball and his wife Jill, Kara A. Kimball, Alison R. Kimball, and Haley D. Olmstead. She was the proud greatgrandmother of Olivia V. and Emma R. Auger. Fran was a devoted sister of Arthur J. Zetes and his late wife Lillian, Peter J. Zetes, and Mary Zetes. She is survived also by many loving nieces. Fran grew up in Dorchester and was the daughter of Greek immigrants, John and Mary Zetes. She graduated from The Teachers College of the City of Boston and earned a Master’s degree in Education from Boston State College, as well as her Paralegal degree. Through it all, Fran's positive attitude, grand smile and great sense of humor was contagious. Fran taught elementary school in Boston, which she loved. She was a warm-hearted educator. After years in the classroom, Fran returned home to raise her four children. The Harwood home bustled with activity. While helping Walter run his dental practice, Fran built a warm inviting loving home. Family was most important to Fran, and she was the center of it. She hosted countless holidays and celebrations where anyone and everyone was welcomed. Fran was the real "hostess with the mostess." She loved spending time with her cherished family and many friends. Fran was generous with her time, resources, and encouragement. As an active participant in her community, Fran was a self-proclaimed professional volunteer—giving her time, energy and foresight to numerous health and human services organizations. She spent over 40 years as a Norwood Hospital volunteer, as well as serving as a member of the Board of Trustees, Auxiliary Board, Development and Foundation Committee for Norwood Hospital and Chairman of the Nursing Committee. Fran served as volunteer President of the Norwood Visiting Nurses Association. Concerned about the financial limitations of this small agency and its ability to provide high quality care for patients, Fran participated and managed the merging of five area VNAS that ultimately became a strong, effective heath care organization that offered a range of top-notch services to the community. Fran continued her mission of advancing services to the community in her role as a two term Board of Health Chairwoman. Fran was also President of the Norwood Senior Center and a member of the Council of Aging. She served on the Norfolk Mental Health Board of Directors, the League of Women Voters Board, the Advisory Board at New England Sinai, and other private foundations. She volunteered countless hours working with the Norwood recreation department and many other organizations. If Fran wasn’t hosting a celebration at her home, at a board meeting, attending night school, selflessly taking care of others, or running a function, she was traveling the world, enjoying events at the Norwood Italian Club, attending her weekly bowling group, or happily enriching the lives of her children and grandchildren. At her home, there was always a crossword or jigsaw puzzle to complete, a rug to make, or an outfit to sew. Fran was a powerhouse with an incredible can-do attitude and shared this with everyone she met. Her kindness, generosity, fun-loving spirit, and open arms are some of the many legacies she left us. Fran taught us to be our own person and that you can do whatever you put your mind to. Thank you Mom for teaching us how to enjoy life and to pass it on. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 10th at 10:00am from the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street (Rte. 1A), Norwood, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Norwood. Interment will follow the Mass in Highland Cemetery, Norwood. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 2:00-5:00pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Frances J. Harwood may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 15829, Arlington, VA 22215 or the charity of one’s choice.
