

Hugh H. Hanrahan III, 74, of Albany, New York, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2025, peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Rutland, Vermont, Hugh moved to Albany at a young age and made it his lifelong home. He was preceded in death by his father, Honorable Hugh H. Hanrahan, his mother, Madeline Faye (Bertolino), and his sister, Mary Ellen Hanrahan. Hugh was the beloved brother of Frank Hanrahan and Roddy Hanrahan; his sister, Kate, and her husband, John Gibbs; his sister Janet, her husband, Daniel O’Connell. Hugh was the adored uncle of his niece, Sarah, her husband, Daniel Chimino, his nephews, Roddy Gibbs and Thomas O’Connell, as well as his beloved great-niece and great-nephew, Sadie and Connor Chimino.
Hugh was a proud graduate of Vincentian Institute (1968) and the State University of New York at Albany (1974). His professional career was dedicated to child protection, first with the Albany County Child Support Enforcement Unit and later with New York State Child Support Services. He found deep fulfillment in his work, particularly in seeing children receive the support they deserved. Hugh retired from the state in 2010 after a long and impactful committed career.
Hugh was gentle, kind, warm and loving to everyone who knew him. In his retirement, Hugh enjoyed spending time with family and friends, particularly during vacations to Cape Cod. He cherished the moments spent with his nieces and nephews, who adored him in return. At the Cape, Hugh was an avid Ironman contender for the past 30 years. In addition to his family, Hugh had a deep passion for gun collecting, handloading ammunition, and target shooting. He was a longtime member of the Brunswick Sportsman’s Club and enjoyed visiting his extended family in Vermont, where he was warmly embraced by cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Hugh's loss is deeply felt by all who knew him. His kind heart, passion for life, and his love and dedication to his family will be remembered always.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the Hanrahan family at Calling Hours in the Magin and Keegan Funeral Home, 891 Madison Avenue, ALBANY, New York, on Thursday, January 9th, from 4 - 7 PM.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Vincent de Paul Church, Madison Avenue, Albany, New York, on Friday, January 10, at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Albany Rural Cemetery, Albany, New York.
