James Edward O'Neil M.D.

James Edward O’Neil, M.D. of Norwood passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 9, 2020 a day shy of his 95th birthday. Born in Brookline, MA on January 10, 1925 he was the son of the late James Edward and Mary (Fay) O’Neil.

James grew up in Chestnut Hill and graduated from Boston College High School with the class of 1942. After high school he was accepted into Boston College, but his studies were interrupted after his freshman year when he was drafted into the Army during WWII. James served overseas in both the European and Pacific Theaters as an infantry mortar gunner with the 97th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman’s medal. After being discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant, James returned to Boston College and graduated with the class of 1949. After college, James went on to graduate from Tufts Medical School. Dr. O’Neil was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon to work at Norwood Hospital, and had his own practice in Norwood for 37 years.

James was very active in St. Catherine Parish where he was a daily communicant and altar server, CCD teacher, lector, and Eucharistic Minister. In his spare time, James enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and rooting for the Boston College Eagles football team. Dr. O’Neil was a lifelong season ticket holder and attended every Boston College home football game.

Beloved husband of the late Patricia (Chard) O’Neil. Loving father of Patricia O’Neil of Norwood, James O’Neil & his wife Nancy of Walpole, Richard O’Neil, Ellen O’Neil of Norwood, Vincent O’Neil of Cranston, RI, and Gregory O’Neil & his wife Maureen of Bridgewater, NJ. Cherished grandfather of Christy, Kari Davis and her husband Cotter, Torie, Connor, and Kyle. Devoted brother of Elinor Bowers, Jeane Ann Bowers, and the late Mary Mahoney and Thomas O’Neil. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank all of the kind and loving people at Norwood Hospital, Hope Hospice, Home Helpers Caregivers, and especially Marcella, Catherine, Anne, Adrianne, and Mary for the outstanding care and comfort they brought to our dad over the past 3 years.

Relatives & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, January 12 from 2-6 PM in the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street, Norwood.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place in St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 549 Washington Street, Norwood on Monday, January 13 at 11AM. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.

Jim was my best friend and mentor when I joined him at Norwood Orthopedics in 1973.
I am sending heartfelt condolences to you all and recalling your generous hospitality and support.. particularly at those post BC-Holy Cross football get togethers. I am thinking of Jim and you all while here in Hawaii.
