Jeanne Anne (Legere) Whitford, 73, of Norwood, passed away December 6, 2020. Jeanne was born July 30, 1947 to Robert and Doris (Caouette) Legere, in Fitchburg, MA. She attended St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1965, among the top of her class. At Northeastern University, Jeanne was one of only a few female students who chose the field of Science. During her participation in their “co-op” program, Jeanne became employed in the engineering department at General Electric in Fitchburg, and was the only woman in that department at the time. Jeanne was so successful, the company offered her a job after she graduated, which she turned down to pursue teaching. She secured her certification in teaching and began her career at Fitchburg High. While at GE, Jeanne met Bob Whitford, a young and ambitious engineer who would later ask her to be his wife. They were married for 50 years. During that time, they raised two daughters, Amanda and Angela; and in recent years, Jeanne enjoyed the arrival of her three beloved grandchildren, Maeve, Seamus, and Annabelle. She truly cherished her role as Grandma.
After staying home to raise Amanda and Angela, Jeanne rejoined the workforce and played an important role in the development of specialized math programs at several area colleges including: Quinsigamond Community College, Holy Cross University, and Assumption College. She spent the latter part of her career as the Business Manager for St. Richard’s Church in Sterling, a job she truly flourished in. Within the church community, people in need would often gravitate to Jeanne because of her openness and compassion. Jeanne took great pride in playing an integral role in the church renovation that took place during her time at St. Richard’s.
Her daughters, Amanda Whitford-Ahearn and Angela Whitford-Downing’s treasured memories of their mom include her frequent and funny “one-line zingers”, her sweet and sassy puppet named Sugar Bear, and dancing in the kitchen to Michael Jackson tunes. What Amanda and Angela most remember is her encouragement of them to always shoot for the stars, and the importance showing kindness to all people. They developed a love for the ocean from Jeanne, and have many wonderful memories of their yearly trips to York Beach, Maine. Family members credit Jeanne with hosting the “best family parties.” She knew how to have fun, and her spirit was contagious. She was a great cook and her specialties were sought after, but she would never divulge her culinary secrets.
Amanda and Angela believe their mom had “nine lives.” She was born a tiny 4-pound preemie; she recovered from a car accident; she dealt with a diagnosis of Graves’ Disease and didn’t let it slow her down; and, at 58 years old she survived a devastating aneurysm and stroke. Throughout those last 15 years of her life, despite the significant health challenges she faced, Jeanne remained upbeat when many others would have given up. She spent the last few years of her life in a nursing home, and even then was a source of strength and inspiration for many of her fellow residents.
In addition to Bob, Amanda and Angela, Jeanne is survived by her sisters Christine Legere of South Yarmouth, Margie Gabrieli and Margie’s husband Rick of Exeter, NH; and many loving nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Bob. Due to the current state of the world, in lieu of a funeral, the family plans to have a celebration of life for Jeanne sometime next summer. Remembrances may be made in the form desired by friends. Correspondence c/o Amanda Whitford Ahearn, 58 Woodbine Road Norwood, MA 02062.
