Joseph C. Garron, of Hallowell ME and formerly of Norwood, passed away at home on Tuesday January 16, 2024 at age 97.
Joe was born to Clarence and Emily Garron, and spent his early years in Proctor, VT. His family moved to Roslindale, MA when he was seven.
In his youth, Joe loved to box and high dive at the YMCA. In his teens, he jumped off a 90’ cliff at Quincy Quarries to rescue a drowning stranger.
Joe joined the Navy in WWII where he served on a minesweeper. After the war, he earned a degree as an electrical engineer at Northeastern University and went to work at Boston Edison.
He joined the Old Colony Ski Club starting his lifelong love of skiing. At the ski club, Joe met Ria whom he married in 1955. They moved to Norwood in 1959 where they built their home and family together.
An active father, Joe was always involved with his children’s activities, especially tennis, which he played as well. He even built a tennis backboard in their driveway and in their basement. When his children took an interest in ice skating, he built an ice rink in their backyard.
He spent many vacations camping with his family, even taking a four-week cross country trip visiting national parks across America. His efficient and organized nature showed when he trained his family to take down their tent trailer in 7 minutes to ensure an early start each day.
Joe had a selfless nature, which was shown when his children had their own homes, and he would fix or build anything including sheds and playgrounds. His grandchildren would say that he could build anything. He was active with his grandchildren, even teaching them to ski and play tennis.
Joe will be remembered for being a loving, caring, devoted and talented husband, father, and grandfather. He lived an active life, and he was always ready for adventure. He and Ria traveled the world visiting every continent except Antarctica. His favorite activity was skiing. He joined ski clubs and skied all over New England and the world; he was even dropped from a helicopter for some extreme skiing. He skied until age 94.
Joseph was the beloved husband of the late Maria (Bevilacqua) Garron, and the devoted father of Paul J. Garron and his wife Lynette of CA, Mary E. Garron and her husband Robert Goodale of Dedham, Barbara and her husband Kenny Nado of Attleboro, and Laura Garron and her husband William Bourne of Hallowell, ME. He was the brother of the late Marie Egan and Robert Garron. Joseph was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Zachary, Sasha, Nicole, Loring, Mackenzie, Shayne, Lexie and Zander and two great-grandchildren James and Maverick; and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
