Philip D. Cuff

Philip D. Cuff, 91, of Norwood, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2019. Born on August 21, 1928 in East Dedham, he was the son of the late Stephen & Ella (McGee) Cuff. He was raised in East Dedham and attended Dedham Public Schools. Philip worked as a Meat Cutter for Stop and Shop before enlisting in the United States Marine Corp on January 14, 1952. He proudly served his country during the Korean War where he saw combat action and was awarded the Bronze Star for his meritorious service. On January 13, 1954 Philip was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps with the rank of Private First Class. After his discharge he went back to work at Stop and Shop as a meat cutter, a position he held for 43 years until his retirement in 1989. After his retirement from Stop and Shop, he began working as a bartender for the original Midway Steakhouse in Dedham and then Concannon’s Village and The Irish Heaven both located in Norwood.
Philip was also a member of the Norfolk County Detachment of the Marine Corps League, where he served as the past Commandant. Phil was affectionately known as “Grumpy”, his first grandchild’s attempt at “Grampy”, which became a nickname many, took loving delight in calling him. Phil was an avid fan of the New England sports teams, especially the Red Sox and Patriots but most of all he was the biggest fan of the sports teams his grandchildren and great-grandchildren played on over the years.
Beloved husband of the late Eunice M. (Bridges) Cuff. Devoted father of Wanda Niss & her husband Paul of Ft. Meyers, FL, Wendy Raftery of Norwood, and Cindy Ide & her partner Dave Crouse of Grafton. Loving grandfather of Laurie Cesati & her husband Rick, Jamie Tatro & her husband Todd, Valerie Roach & her husband Todd, Andrew Niss, Kevin Raftery & his wife Victoria, Timothy Raftery & his partner Anna Canavan, Ryan Raftery, and Matthew Ide & his partner Kate Wagner. Proud great-grandfather of Tyler, Madison, Jordan, Alexis, and Michael. He was predeceased by his son, Philip David Cuff, Jr. and his six siblings, William Cuff, Ruth Briggs, Jack Cuff, Lorraine Weibrecht, Marion Demers, and Elizabeth Bernsen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 26, at 10AM from the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street (Route 1A), Norwood, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM in St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 549 Washington Street, Norwood. Burial with full military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery in Norwood.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 25, from 4-8PM at the funeral home.
