Stephanie Bonica, 98, of Norwood, MA, passed away peacefully at home on April 2, 2026. One of her faithful caregivers, Maria, was at her side. A beloved aunt, great-aunt, daughter, sister and friend, Stephanie will be remembered for many things including her love of the written word and the arts (both performing and visual), cherishing her Italian heritage, her magical home cooking, unshakeable Catholic faith and dry wit. Her enduring legacy will be her devotion to family and friends.
Except for a few decades’ interlude when she lived in the Back Bay of Boston, Stephanie was a lifelong resident of Norwood from her birth on September 13, 1927. She graduated from Norwood High School in 1945, earned her BA in English cum laude from Boston University in 1949 and her MA in English from BU in 1952. Stephanie later returned to BU to pursue a doctorate in Education. Realizing her true calling lay in the world of publishing rather than the classroom, she went on to spend the next twenty years helping children all over the country develop a love for reading as an editor at Houghton Mifflin until her retirement in 1992.
Even more important to Stephanie than the power of the written word was the Italian cultural centerpiece, “food is love.” Her pantry was always filled to the marvel of her grand-nieces and nephews just in case there was a sudden need for some pasta with her special meatballs. The same went for her freezer, which was overflowing with containers of stew, soup, sauce or some other homemade treat. The only requirement was to bring back her containers, which she would faithfully refill. She never forgot to include the essential question: “What are you having for dinner?” as part of any evening phone call.
Most of all, her devotion to family and her close friends is what all who had the privilege of knowing her will remember about Stephanie. She loved to bring family together for memorable events like a Boston Pops Christmas Performance. She was also a wonderful focal point for family gatherings around her birthday in September, which always seemed to have the perfect weather in her honor. She never forgot a birthday, often marking the occasion with 'Happy Birthday' sung over voicemail to showcase her talent honed in hours of practice as part of St. Catherine’s choir.
Finally, Stephanie was a woman who set an example of consistency through good times and persistence through difficult ones. She lost her dear cousin, Bettina Coletti, her two brothers and sisters-in-law and other beloved family members before their time and she was a multiple cancer survivor. Life’s ebbs and flows never lessened her generosity or love. Throughout her 98 and a half years, she remained “Stephanie” and that was always more than enough to keep all who loved her happily in her orbit.
Stephanie is predeceased by her parents, Stephen E. and Florence E. Bonica; her brothers, Joseph S. Bonica and wife Lucia M. and Donald J. Bonica and wife Beatrice M.; her niece, Joan L. Lynch; nephew, Stephen P. Bonica and nephew and godson, Joseph G. Bonica.
Stephanie leaves behind her nieces, Jeanne M. Guerin of Weston, MA, Diane C. Smith of Stratham, NH, Marie L. Martell and husband Paul of Hopkinton, NH, Nancy A. Lipsky and husband Steven of Marblehead, MA; nephew John P. Bonica and wife Cathleen of Leominster, MA, nephew and godson, James S. Bonica of Arlington, MA; Kenneth Lynch, husband of the late Joan Lynch of Norwood, MA, plus several grand-nieces and nephews whom she adored. In addition, Stephanie leaves behind her loving caregivers, Maria Papadopoulos of Walpole, Mary McIntyre of Norwood and Eileen Gibney of Norwood without whom she could not have remained in her lifelong home — a place that was at the center of so many precious memories for generations.
A Requiem Mass for Stephanie will be held in St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 547 Washington St., Norwood, on Tuesday April 7, 2026 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be in the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St., Norwood, prior to the Mass from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Norwood. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Stephanie's memory may be made in the form of a donation to St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Norwood, or the Norwood Public Library.
