She is survived by her loving husband LeRoy Nathaniel Burkhead Jr. and two daughters Karen Louise Hughes and Michele Leslie Burkhead, Grandchildren Logan Hughes and wife Christina, Connor, Noah and fiance Stephanie, and Haley Freeburger, and Daniel and Haley Aguiar, also Great Grandchildren Violet Birch-Hughes, Raegan Hughes, and Ethan, Emma and Evie Cage. Also survived by siblings Louis J O’Donnell Jr. and late wife Janice, Jordan Papandreu and wife Wendee, “Bopie” Caliope Papandreu and Maria Clegg and husband Samuel.
“Anne” was a wonderful wife and amazing mother. She was a loving Grandmother and Great Grandmother and was so very proud of all of them. Grandparents Day at the elementary school was her favorite. She dearly loved her family, both immediate and extended. She welcomed Sara, Terri, Tim, Brett, Dave and Kyle into her life and considered them bonus Grandchildren. She adopted the entire Burkhead family as her own and considered each and every one of them a true brother and sister. She never met a stranger and was caring and compassionate until her last breath. Her life touched so many people in so many ways. She was a true and loyal friend and a true inspiration to anyone who knew her.
She was a long time member of the Perry Hall Community, a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church Fullerton since 1970. She respected all religions and the individual right to worship in the manner you chose. Anne loved being with people and spent time participating in aerobics classes, bowling leagues, PTA, Class Mother, class trips, and Girl Scout Troop events among many others. The St. Joseph Chicken dinner was a favorite. She was most proud of her volunteer service at Beans and Bread. She loved family gatherings of any kind and never missed a wedding, baptism, baby or wedding shower, family reunion or annual Burkhead Christmas party. In fact, she was often the first one there and the last to leave. Her Christmas card list was a mile long and she never missed a birthday or special occasion.
Anne was a strong, independent woman who entered the workforce at age 18, working at both Glen L Martin Company and The Social Security Administration. At her part time job at the Dutch Mill Lounge and Restaurant, the Manager introduced her to his eldest son and the rest, as they say, is history! They married in 1957, had their first daughter in 1958 and Anne left the workforce to become a full time Mother and Housewife. She never looked back. Her second daughter was born in 1967 and the family was complete. Her role as a mother and wife were always her first priority. This year will mark 65 years of a long and wonderful marriage. A great example of a relationship rooted in love, compromise and dedication. She was an excellent parent, always showing love and affection, appreciation for the little and big things. Her refrigerator has always held school drawings, colored pictures, graduation notices, wedding invitations and new baby announcements. She was always present in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. There was never a doubt how she felt about her family.
Anne’s door and heart was always open to anyone who needed a helping hand or just a hug. She was compassionate, caring and was always rooting for the underdog. Never judgemental and always supportive, she stood up for what was right and fair. Ever the optimist she was a shining example to everyone of what it means to love and be loved, to support one another in good times and bad and to celebrate life to the fullest.
