Dorothy Ellen Huber

On September 12, 2026, Dorothy Ellen Huber passed away. Dorothy is the beloved wife of the late Charles W. Huber; devoted mother of Colleen Hicks (Charles, Jr.), Julie Young (John), John Huber (Lisa), and Charles H. Huber; loving grandmother of Officer Ryan Charles Hicks, Sean Patrick Hicks, Jack Young, Jeff Young, Joanie Young, Maxwell Huber, and Dean Huber; dear sister of Sheila Burke, Michael Burke, Daniel Burke, and the late Eileen Potteiger, and Angela Burke; aunt of Kathy Burke.

Dorothy Ellen Huber (nee Burke) was born in East Baltimore City on June 15, 1941. Her Mother, Catherine Wolf was of German ancestry and her Father, John J. Burke, was from Ireland, immigrating to America in the early 20th century around 1922. She was born in a small Baltimore City rowhouse in N. Ellwood Avenue. She had 2 older sisters, Eileen & Angela, 1 younger sister, Sheila, and 2 younger brothers, Mike & Danny.

The Burke Family of 8 lived in that small rowhome until my mother was 14 years old & just starting high school at the Catholic High School of Baltimore. They moved to a single-family brick cottage -style home on Glenmore Avenue in Hamilton. Although still located in Baltimore City, the suburban setting next to Burdick Park seemed like the country to the family. Dorothy took secretarial courses in high school & worked for the C&P Telephone Company for a few years after high school, before meeting my father. She also was a volunteer for the US Military social club the “USO” & her picture on the prayer cards & this obituary are from those USO days.

She met her husband, Charles W. Huber, at the “Hi-Fi Club” on Lennings Lane, In Rosedale, Baltimore County. He would send her drinks & ask her to dance when slow, country ballads were played but was generally rather shy about talking to her on that first night. However, he did work up the nerve to ask for her phone number, but she declined. However, later that same night, he came to her rescue when her car would not start. He opened the hood & adjusted a few things, & the car started right up! He asked for her number again & this time she gave it to him!

His family was thrilled that Charlie had found himself a girlfriend, but they were surprised that Dorothy lived in Baltimore City – a “city girl!” Charles & Dotty had fun with that! They went to drag races, demolition derbies, drive-in movies, long rides on dark country roads & traipsing through the woods - experiences that were all new to Dotty! Their romance bloomed & they married on April 23, 1966.

Charlie worked for many years in the commercial construction business hanging drywall. In addition to his full-time job, he would often work side jobs hanging drywall on the weekends or in the evenings, as they decided that Dotty would leave her employment at the C&P Telephone Company when they started having their four children – Colleen, Julie, John & Charlie. This was my mother’s dream, to have a large family & be a full-time mother to them. They bought an end of group row home in Baltimore City with three bedrooms in 1968 & stayed there until June of 2011, when they moved back to the “country” to their home on Pfeffers Road in Kingsville, Md. The row home on Parkside Drive in Baltimore City was a nice place to raise a family in the 1960’s into the 1980’s. They lived right across from Herring Run Park, which was great for sports activities for the kids & room to explore. However, even back then, the city schools were failing & they decided to make the financial sacrifice to send all their children to private Catholic elementary & High Schools, which was a significant amount of money for a family funded by a sole earner. There were no fancy vacations, new cars or restaurant dinners. McDonald’s & day trips to Hershey Park & Ocean City were the highlights of our lives growing up! But they taught us the value of hard work, strong family ties, & how to save money & how to make it work for you.

Dotty was proud of her family & was happy her kids had all done well & made happy lives for themselves. She provided a good foundation for her family with her strong Catholic faith. Things certainly got a little crazy on Parkside Drive with a family of 6 people, but the dysfunction was surely part of the fun! I am sure that all four of us kids have our humorous & fun-loving personalities because of how we had to interact with each other & with all the neighborhood chaos that always seemed to be happening on our doorstep. Our Mother always made sure we were having fun playing games, swimming in our pool, and having friends over to join in.

Dotty had seven grandchildren & she got to see all of them grow well into their early teens to late-twenties by the time of her death. Of the grandchildren, only one of them was a girl, Joanie, so of course she held a very special place in her heart. Because Joanie lived close by on the same road, she got to see her grow up almost daily. Joanie could do no wrong in Dotty’s eyes & they were very close.

Dotty lived a relatively active life with good health until the Fall of 2025, when issues with her heart started to surface. She loved going to Bingo’s with her large group of women friends & her sister-in-laws, Charlotte, Peggy & Michaela. They were the 3 musketeers & my mother made 4! Dotty attended at least 1 Bingo every week for the past 15 years. Until her recent bought of terminal cancer, she was always on the go & enjoying her life.

We all love her & will miss her dearly. We will hold her in our thoughts as we go through life & hope we will see her again. Her laughter & fun-loving personality were infectious to all who met her. Dorothy Ellen Huber – may you rest in eternal peace. Bye-bye Dots!! We love you!!

Relatives and friends will gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd., Nottingham MD 21236, on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 5-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 18, 2026, 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen Church (Bradshaw), 8030 Bradshaw Rd., Bradshaw MD 21087.
