Having lived a long life, Frederick Ferdinand Cech passed peacefully on Sunday, October 18th at the age of 92. Fred is survived by his four children: Timothy Cech, Frederick (Rick) Cech, Glenn Cech, and Wendy Brown; seven grandchildren: Jessica, Matthew, Amanda, Alex, Christie, Amy, and Gregory; and twelve great grandchildren: Brandon, Caleb, Chase, Lorenzo, Cheyenne, Riley, Caitlin, Christianna, Reagan, Rory, Camille, and Christopher.
For over thirty years, Fred was the owner of Cech’s Amoco on Pulaski Highway. Although he had no formal mechanical education, Fred had a gift for diagnosing and correcting difficult engine problems. He worked long hours in the early years and did what many do to make ends meet: he expanded his services offerings to towing and selling Christmas trees.
Very few people fail the first grade. Fred would laugh as he recounted that foundational year. “I failed because instead of listening to the teacher, I was making paper airplanes.” To address the problem, his parents transferred him to a Catholic elementary school. Twelve years later, he graduated from Sparrow’s Point High School with the Class of 1947.
Fred continued his love of airplanes and became an avid model airplane builder. He would purchase the kit and throw away all the plastic pieces. With a block of balsam wood, he would carve out the propeller, nose, and all the external airplane lighting. In later years, he would expand his creative talents to bird houses, and mini recreations of houses, boats, and places of interest.
Fred also enjoyed the water. Raised in Turner Station, he spent many years fishing and crabbing in the small, but life-filled cove of Bear Creek. When his finances afforded him the luxury, Fred and his wife, Lois, purchased a small summer home near Rocky Point State Park. There he found peace and much enjoyment: fishing, crabbing, boating, and tending a rather large vegetable garden.
