On June 1, 2018, John Curtis Earles, Jr.; beloved husband of Ann L. Earles; devoted father of Karen Torbit and her husband Steve, Tammy Geelhaar and her husband Ken and Lynette Earles; loving grandfather of Patrick Torbit, Allison Groff, Barbara Ann Chroniger and Candace Geelhaar; great-grandfather of Kinley, Kiera, Perry, Alice, Autumn, Quinn and Levi; dear brother of Ann O’Neal and the late Rose Marie Paice.
John was born on January 16, 1928, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of John Curtis Earles, Sr. and Alice Softley Earles. John grew up in a Christian home with his parents and two sisters, Rose Marie and Ann Jeanette. As a child he enjoyed playing baseball and attending Boy Scout activities. Later in his teens, he worked at the Clifton Park Golf Course as a caddie. After graduating from vocational school in 1946 at the age of 18, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While serving in the Marine Corps, he worked as a computer operator where he met his wife who worked as a key punch operator. John received an honorable discharge after 6 years of service. He and Ann were married on June 5 in 1954 and have three daughters, Karen, Tammy and Lynette. John enjoyed a 36-year career in computers with Koppers Company and Systemhouse, Inc. He was a devoted husband, father (especially to his youngest special needs daughter, Lynette), grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and bowling on Wednesday evenings with Reformation Lutheran Church bowling league. John was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Towson, Maryland for 63 years. He was recognized for his service on the stewardship committee. He also served as a deacon and trustee. John loved travelling and especially enjoyed vacations at his parents’ home in Montverde, Florida. He was an avid coin collector and recycler. John realized his dream of flying in 1981. After taking flight lessons at The Baltimore Air Park, he obtained his solo pilot’s license.
Relatives and friends will gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd., Nottingham MD 21236, on Friday 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday 10:00 a.m., with a visitation from 9:30-10:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 120 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Towson MD 21204. Interment Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. A luncheon will follow the interment, additional information will be provided at the funeral home.
