

Kim was the beloved wife of Ernest Fitzgerald Hankerson and the devoted mother of E.J. Hankerson. She was the loving sister of Rev. Dr. Karen Moore Wicker and her husband Willie, and Leonard Moore, Jr. and his wife Roz; cherished aunt of Steven Money, Nina Moore, Leonard “Tre” Moore, III, and Allie Moore. She is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins, and her loyal dog, Winston.
Kim grew up in the church, attending John Wesley AME Zion Church in Washington, D.C., where she developed a strong foundation of faith, community, and service.
A proud scholar, Kim earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science from The Catholic University of America, her Master’s in Education from The Ohio State University, and her Doctorate of Education from The George Washington University. She was a lifelong learner and avid reader who loved sharing her favorite books with others.
Kim was a dedicated teacher and administrator in D.C. Public Schools, inspiring countless students and colleagues. She was also a successful entrepreneur; she and her husband Ernie operated a thriving residential and commercial cleaning company, serving clients including the U.S. Army.
She loved spending time with family, traveling to watch her son’s baseball games, and enjoying vacations to Cape May and Myrtle Beach, making lasting memories and sharing a good laugh along the way.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, 9705 Belair Rd, Nottingham, MD 21236, on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 2 to 4 P.M., with a Celebration of Life service beginning at 4 P.M.
A repast will immediately follow at Aventus House, located at 11433 Pulaski Hwy, Suite 1, White Marsh, MD 21162.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Kim’s name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure at www.komen.org .
Though she is deeply missed, the love, wisdom, and joy Kim shared will remain a guiding light for all who knew her.
