Marion Louise Baker

She was born on November 11, 1942, in Halifax Co, North Carolina, to the late Jonas Baker and Olivia Jones.

She spent most of her career serving as an executive assistant with the New York City Board of Education, and the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. She was noticed as one of the fastest typists they had ever seen.

Marion was an avid reader and enjoyed watching game shows, especially Jeopardy, where she amazed her family and friends with her ability to answer almost every question. She had a huge heart and a nurturing spirit, always caring for others and making everyone around her feel loved, welcomed, and valued. But most of all, she treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. Her kindness, compassion, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She had always been a strong little lady and didn’t hold back how she felt about most things e.g., I would be singing, and she would say, Shell, you do know the words I’ll give you that, but baby, you couldn’t hold a tune if it had a handle on it. Or, the times when she was say, honey when are you getting your hair done, because why…it looked a mess. Growing up, she would always tell us to make sure when we stepped outside to make sure we had clean underwear, our clothes were neat and our hair combed, because you just never know what the day holds. Comments like these are only a portion of why she is loved so dearly. She was always there to provide guidance and a listening ear to anyone that crossed her path, and all without judgment…never judgment. Marion accepted people as they are, which represents how beautiful she was inside and out and oh boy she made the best potato salad.

Marion, a woman of extraordinary strength and grace. She will never be forgotten!

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Andrea Vega; two grandchildren, Ramel Baker and Nicholas Ingram; her brothers, Walter Gene Baker and William Sonny Baker; and her sisters, Gladys Neville, Jeanette Powell, Lilly Mae Whitaker, Anne Olivia Bishop, and Betty Jean Key.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Jena Williams of Monroe and Stephanie Baker of New York; her son, Robert Collins of Florida; sixteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sisters, Doris Ann Mitchell and Mildred Hux; and many devoted nieces, nephews, and special friends, who are like family that loved her dearly.

A Receiving of Family and Friends will be held at Schimunek Funeral Home, 9705 Belair Road, Nottingham, MD 21236 on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by a Memorial Service beginning at 12:00 pm.
