Richard James Mann

Richard James Mann, 87, of Nottingham Maryland passed away Monday, May 8, 2023 at home with family. Richard was born June 19, 1935 in Allentown a son of the late William C. and Matilda (Schlichting) Chekan and stepson of Andrew Chekan. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he took on the nickname “Midge.” After graduating from Seton Hall University, Richard went to work in retail management. He was proud to manage the historic Hutzler’s Palace department store downtown Baltimore, where he would take his children to the Tearoom and regularly get an egg salad sandwich and cup of soup. He loved to work and did so into his seventies, after which he continued enjoying yardwork and working in his gardens. After work he enjoyed spending time with his dog “Bud-e-Luv” (17 years). In his early years, Richard enjoyed spending time with his children, playing cards (Poker) while taking the kids pennies! In his later years he enjoyed lottery scratch-offs, and anything with peanut butter on account he loved his sweets! He liked going to the beach, listening to Elvis Presley, and cheering on his favorite football team, the Baltimore Ravens!

Preceding him in death was his late wife of 38 years Kathleen Veronica Mann, son Richard A. Mann (Paula), and daughter Beth G. Mann, brothers William, Barry, Stanley, Donald and sisters Joy and Marie. Richard is survived by wife of 25 years, Janet Lee Mann, stepson Jaimie Deitrich, sister Jeannie, numerous nieces, including Kelly (Stanley’s daughter) and nephews, daughters Pamela Kay Mayfield (Ed), Cindy Denise Hinz, grandson (raised as a son) Brian James Mann (wife: Sherry), numerous grandchildren including Dustin Hinz, Kali Hinz (Cindy), Alicia (Richard A. & Paula) and great grandchildren including Sarah, Julie, Lauren Mann (Brian & Sherry).

A visitation for Richard will be held at Schimunek Funeral Home, 9705 Belair Rd, Nottingham, MD 21236 on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Where a Funeral Service will be held on May 24, 2023 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Brian James Mann of Richlands, North Carolina officiating. Interment and Military Honors will be held at Parkwood Cemetery. An additional celebration of life will be held at a later time.
