Born on February 6, 1949, to Helen Surman and Robert G. Childress Sr., Bob was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He lived a life defined by hard work, service to his country, love for his family, and an appreciation for the outdoors.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1967 to 1971, including service in Vietnam. His time in the Army was an important chapter of his life and reflected the strength, determination, and work ethic that he carried with him throughout the years that followed.
After his military service, Bob built a long career in the construction industry. He spent many years working as a crane operator before later becoming a site foreman and inspector. He took great pride in his work, and his years of hands-on experience and knowledge served him well throughout his career.
Away from work, Bob was happiest outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping and had a lifelong love for dogs. And, of course, there was his cigar—almost always hanging from the corner of his mouth, a familiar look that became unmistakably Bob to everyone who knew him. Whether spending time outside, telling stories, or simply enjoying the company of those around him, Bob appreciated the simple things in life.
Above all, Bob was a father and grandfather. He is survived by his three children: son Robert Childress and his wife, Dena; daughter Kristen Hollis and her husband, Greg; and daughter Megan Fumia and her husband, Jeremy.
He was the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren: Kaylee Childress Krieger and her husband, Rhett; Kara, and Abby Childress; Evan and Finnegan Hollis; and Victoria, Blake, Ethan, Isabella, and Felicity Fumia.
Bob leaves behind a lifetime of memories for his family and friends. He will be remembered for his strength and work ethic, his love of the outdoors and animals, the stories he shared, that ever-present cigar, and the familiar presence that made him simply “Bob” to those who knew and loved him.
His life and legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, and the many people whose lives he touched along the way.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd., Nottingham, MD 21236, on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, where a Funeral Service will be held at1:00 pm. The committal service will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens, 10201 Bird River Rd., Baltimore, MD 21220.
