

On January 28, 2025, Robert Craig Pitt Sr. passed away. He was the son of the late Katherine and William A. Pitt, Sr.; the beloved husband of the late Emily Yvonne Pitt (nee Thompson); devoted father of Robert Craig Pitt Jr.; dear brother of Virginia L. Smith, and the late William R. Pitt Sr., Warren H. Pitt, and William A. Pitt Jr.; and a cherished godfather to Sandy Marshall and Timothy Smith, as well as a beloved relative to many nieces and nephews.
Born in 1936 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Robert was baptized and confirmed at Betz’s United Lutheran Church in Catonsville. He was raised in East Baltimore and spent his summers in St. Mary’s County, where his father and uncle ran a full-service oil and gas station. Robert was a proud graduate of Mergenthaler High School, Class of 1955.
Robert served in the U.S. Army’s 1st and 2nd Armies and was a sergeant in the 9th Division of the Maryland National Guard, known as the “Dandy 5th.” A passionate baseball player, he played catcher for the Tall Timbers and Seven Eleven All Stars baseball teams. He also coached numerous baseball clubs, including Seven Eleven, Northwood Little League, Yankee Rebels, Stembridge, and Towson American Legion.
In 1993, Robert was honored with the William A. Pitt, Sr. Memorial Award from the Yankee Rebels and was nominated for the 1996 Oscar Mayer & Co. Coach of the Year award. He also served as a scout for both the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox. Robert was a proud member of the Maryland Amateur Baseball Congress, the Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association, and the Old-Timers Baseball Association of Maryland, where he served as past president.
Throughout his life, Robert remained deeply committed to his community, notably leading the Christmas Toy Drive for the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology Center. He retired from the Crown, Cork, and Seal Company in 1993 and shared lifelong friendships with Bob Brennan and Clifford Long.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd, Nottingham, MD 21236, on Monday, February 3, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM, with interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
