Bob was the friend everyone wished they had—a good man with a generous heart who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bob was born on August 21, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland. His childhood was filled with family, cousins, and cherished memories. To his family, he was affectionately known as “Sonny.” Throughout his life, he was also lovingly known as Dad, Pop Pop, and Gramps.
Bob attended St. Alphonsus School in Baltimore and was bilingual in Lithuanian. He was incredibly proud of his Lithuanian heritage and loved attending ethnic festivals.
Whenever he had the chance, he enjoyed raising a glass of vyitas and offering a toast in Lithuanian, sharing a treasured part of his heritage. He also loved spending time at the American Legion with his friends.
Bob dedicated his working life to the newspaper industry. He began working at the News American at just 15 years old and steadily advanced throughout his career. He eventually became president of the pressmen’s union, where he played an instrumental role in contract negotiations, preventing work stoppages, and participating in countless arbitration meetings.
Bob made a lasting difference in the lives of his fellow workers. Many of his friends would say, “I would not have the retirement I have if it weren’t for Bob.” That sentiment speaks volumes about his dedication, his leadership, and the respect he earned from those who worked alongside him.
When the News American closed in May 1986, Bob continued his career at The Baltimore Sun. He retired at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty, and advocacy for his fellow pressmen.
Bob lived a life that mattered. He worked hard, stood up for others, treasured his family, and never missed an opportunity to share a toast with friends.
Bob married his wife, Marliese, in May of 1990. Together, they shared 36 years filled with travel, memories, and time spent with family and friends. Their life together was filled countless special moments that they will always hold dear.
Bob is survived by his wife, Marliese Stallings; his daughter, Charlene (Stallings) DeRoche, and her husband, Bill; his grandchildren, Ashlyn, Andrew, and Matthew DeRoche; his son, Robert Stallings; and his granddaughter, Stephanie.
He is also survived by Marliese’s children, Andy Carl and his wife, Laurie, and Sven Carl and his wife Amanda along with Sven’s children, Justin, Kayla, Sebastian, Tyler, and Mica.
May heaven welcome him with open arms and a glass raised in his honor. Rest peacefully, Bob. You will never be forgotten. Until we meet again
