
On May 9, 2026, Vernon Elroy Maas, lovingly known as “Duke”, “Ben”, “Poppy” passed away peacefully. Vernon is the beloved husband of Shirley Pearson Maas; devoted father of Verena Maas Brown (Michael Edward, Sr.), Teresa Ann Callahan (late Terence David, Sr.), and Linda Christine Maas Dvorak (Frederick J., III); loving grandfather of Jessica Fink (Marc), Michael Brown, Jr. (Alison), Kelsey Reed (Matthew), Casey Brown, T D Callahan, Jr., Christy Callahan Cromwell (Ben), Kenneth “Duke” Callahan, Brittany Callahan, Benjamin Dvorak, Nicholas Dvorak, Alyssa Harant (Jake), A J Dvorak, and Amia Dvorak; great-grandfather of Riley Fink, Lilly Fink, Kamryn Callahan, Cassius Dvorak, Jovie Harant, and Lucille Dvorak; dear brother of Dorothy Regina Fajkowski and pre-deceased by 6 brothers and sisters.
Vernon had a long successful career of 38 years at DuPont, followed by an additional 15 years at Kunkel. During this time he was also a radio engineer for the Radio Mass of Baltimore for several decades. I his retirement he enjoyed driving a school bus for Baltimore County for over 10 years.
Vern loved working in nature at his Poppy’s Creek cabin, tinkering with his red 1961 GMC truck “Jimmy”, gathering for special events with his family, and playing with his beloved dog Sunny.
Relatives and friends will gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc., 9705 Belair Rd., Nottingham MD 21236, on Friday, May 15, 2026, 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church (Fullerton), 8420 Belair Rd., Nottingham MD 21236, on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Interment Moreland Memorial Park.
