Dr. August L. Stemmer Lovingly known as Bob or August died in Fairfield Ca. on Saturday May 24, 2014. Devoted father of Cynthia Denelle Denny (Cynde), August Randall Stemmer (Randy), Kymberly Jean Stemmer (Kym), Michelle Marie Smith (Michelle) and Valerie Susan Scheiner (Val). Proud grandfather to Jesse Christian Denny, Katrina Marie Errico, Nicolas Anthony Errico, Robert Roric Errico, Dalton Jay Scheiner, Kendal Isis Marie Scheiner and great grandfather to Ariya Jean Marie Errico. August was born In Illinois on March 20, 1929. He was the first of two children born to August and Marie Teresia Stemmer. His younger sister Patsy Guglielmo-Fredricksen of Greenbrae California, along with the rest of his immediate family, survives him. August attended Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he finished with a DMD degree, Harvard Medical School where he was awarded the MD degree and later received a certificate of Healthy Systems Management from Harvard Business School. He was instrumental in forming the nonprofit corporation, Chronic Pain Institute, and authored numerous articles appearing in various medical journals dealing with cases in his specialty of Maxillofacial Surgery as well as writing his book The Integers of Human Volitional Judgment. He was chairman of the Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial department at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital and later the chief of a similar department in the Army’s Landsthul Hospital Department of Otolaryngology while serving as a doctor in Desert Storm. While an Associate Clinical Professor in the Union of the Pacific’s Dental School, he gained notoriety for his research paper involving pain perception. For fifty years he devoted his life to his medical practice, helping many patients who held him in the highest regards. Early on in his life he married his college sweetheart Jean Marie Avery and made his home in California’s Bay Area where he lovingly raised his family. He enjoyed many hobbies such as the game of chess, gardening, real estate, training dogs, and a strong fascination for electronics. August will be missed not only by his family but also by the many lives he touched through friendships, colleagues and patients.
In honor of Dr. August L. Stemmer there will be a private ceremony held at All Saints Lutheran Church in Novato California at 3:30 pm on Saturday June 21, 2014. On Tuesday June 24, 2014 at 11:30 am there will be a private service held at Valley Memorial Park in Novato California. There will be a military full honors service at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
