

Edythe Alma Halliday, 88 years old of Novato California, passed away on January 11, 2015. She was born in Detroit, MI on January 3, 1927 to Kenneth and Delores Smith. She received a Diploma as a Registered Nurse from Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit MI as a part of the WWII Cadet Nursing Corps in 1947 and was married to James Crawford Halliday on June 4, 1949.
Edythe had a long career as an RN, having worked 34 years for the Veterans Administration Hospital, the last 21 years at VA Hospital in San Francisco. Edythe moved to Novato CA from Redford Township MI in 1968 and retired from the VA in 1989. She was passionate about her work and often remarked that her patients were always glad to see her and called her “Smiley”.
Edythe was widowed at age 41 but remained very active, loving to garden, sew, and travel. She went back to school and graduated in 1980 from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Senior Recreation Magna Cum Laude. After retirement she took up Fused Glass Making, her creative work was marketed as Halliday Glass. She was active in the Widowed Persons Association of CA-Novato including two years as chapter president. Loving the outdoors she took the initiative to start and lead a hiking group enjoying all the many scenic hikes in Marin. She continued this weekly hiking for almost 15 years. Edythe was very adventurous and traveled on many excursions with Elder Hostel, most notably hiking in the Swiss Alps, a tour of Scotland, Wales and Ireland and as a present to herself, for her 80th birthday, she took a month long trip to New Zealand and Australia.
She is survived by her daughter Judith Snyder and son James Halliday, grandsons Jimmy Halliday, David Snyder and Valerie Snyder and great-grandsons Joseph and Nathan Hunter. She is predeceased by her husband James Halliday, brother Lawrence Smith, son Kenneth Halliday and granddaughter Heather Halliday Hunter
There will be an informal memorial service at NorCal Skydiving in Cloverdale CA date to be determined.
