Urbano "Rubi" Rubiaco Jr.

October 1, 1946January 2, 2013

Urbano Benito "Rubi" Rubiaco Jr. The Lord brought home Urbano Benito "Rubi" Rubiaco Jr. on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the age of 66. He passed away at his home in Novato, CA. Rubi, as he was known to many, was a devoted son and loving husband, father and brother. He was born October 1, 1946 in Stockton, California to Mary Pazin Rubiaco of Colorado and Urbano Benito Rubiaco of Luzon, Philippines. Rubi retired from the California State Department of Corrections in 1986. During his distinguished career, he served as a Parole Agent, Correctional Sergeant, Jail Liaison and Correctional Officer. Although he worked many years at the San Francisco Parole Division and Soledad State Prison, he is best known by his peers and historians for his heroism as a young Correctional Officer during the infamous 1971 attempted escape at San Quentin State Prison. While pursuing his career and raising a family, he worked continuously to be the best in his field, earning degrees in Criminal Justice, Sociology and Correctional Science. Before joining the Department of Corrections, Rubi served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1964 to 1968 and honorably discharged as Engineman Second Class. He was stationed in Sattahip, Thailand and later became a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. During his retirement he devoted his time to his family, helping others and his passion for fishing. Rubi is survived by his wife: Joyce Sapteiro Rubiaco of Novato, CA; daughter: Terri Loftin of Healdsburg, CA; son: Jim Loftin of Paradise Valley, AZ; son: Jerry Loftin of La Jolla, CA, granddaughters: Trish Malaspina and Anna Marie Loftin; and, grandsons: Ray Malaspina, Joe Malaspina, Alex Loftin, Grant Loftin and Tucker Loftin. He is greatly missed. A vigil will be held at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, January 8 at Keaton's Mortuary in Novato, CA. Rubi was one of the finest people I have ever known, and worked with. He also knew how to fish.

Rubiaco and I (Dean Melling) worked together in SF for about 3 years. Not only did we work together but we commuted together. Rubi lived in Novato and I lived in Rohnert Park. During that time we got well acquainted and worked as partners on many assignments. He was a good parole agent and it was a pleasure to work with someone who took his job seriously and was conscientious. I treasure the time we spent together. In that Rubi had been jail liaison, that made it much easier to interact with the SFPD and jail staff and Rubi knew how to get things done in a minimum of time. I want his family to know that he was a good parole agent, a good friend, and a joy to work with. Our family will keep his wife and family in our prayers. Dean Melling, Retired PA2, Sub-Unit Supervisor.
