Virginia Clare Baxes passed away on January 19, 2019, at the age of 95. She was born on July 26, 1923, in San Francisco, as Virginia Clare Vonderheide to August and Winifred Vonderheide. Ginny grew up in the Sunset District and then moved with her family to San Anselmo in the early 1930s. She attended Tamalpais High School and was a fabulous vocalist who sang a solo at her high school graduation.
Ginny took classes at College of Marin while working at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in San Rafael. She later did clerical work for many years at the Western Pacific Railroad in San Francisco. Ginny enjoyed ice skating and met her love, Andrew Baxes, also of San Francisco, at The Alpineer Club. They married in 1955, settling first in Greenbrae and later Mill Valley, where they raised their two boys, Gregory and David, in beautiful Cascade Canyon at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais. Devoted to her home and family, Ginny delighted in supporting her boys’ activities, cooking and volunteering. In her later years, she worked at Andy’s AndyMac Appliance business in San Francisco. Ginny and Andy retired in Windsor, California, ultimately returning to Mill Valley and then later settling in Novato.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Andrew Baxes of Novato, to whom she was married 63 years; two sons, Gregory of Littleton, Colorado, and David of Geyserville, California; and four grandchildren, Kalin, Cory, Lilybell and Billy Boe.
