Evelyn Koetje passed away July 12, 2012 at the age of 79. She was born August 15, 1932 in Oak Harbor to Hazel and Neil Koetje. She graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1950 and from the University of Washington in 1954 with a degree in education. She taught school in Sunnyside Washington and Oak Harbor for several years. Except for two years she was a lifelong resident of the Oak Harbor area.
Evelyn spent the majority of her adult life struggling with mental illness and found it difficult to maintain relationships and to deal with everyday life. In earlier years she enjoyed elementary and high school friends, learning and teaching history. She enjoyed automobile trips with her family on Sundays, and long excursions in the family camper.
Evelyn is survived by her brother Ed Koetje (Arlene) of Seattle, nephews Erik (Marciann), Lee, Todd (Jeanne), and Brad (Andrea); niece Jeanne Justice (Dean); several grand nephews and grand nieces and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother George (Karel) Koetje and her parents Hazel and Neil Koetje.
The family is planning a graveside memorial service on September 15th at Maple Leaf Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Island Mental Health or the charity of your choice.
