Life was joy for Jerry D. Friedman of Greenbank. This joy touched many lives. Born in Queens, New York City, 1944 Jerry completed his early years in the city then moved to Miami, Florida where he studied art at the University of Miami. Early on he developed an interest in photography and held many gallery shows. He also loved sailing and celestial navigation. His studies led him to teaching, which became a true passion for him. He taught art and photography in Miami-Dade Public Schools for 26.5 years. In Miami, he met the love of his life, Choy-gee Chu, in 1990. After visiting the west coast and falling in love with the area, the couple moved to Whidbey Island in 1999 with their two dogs Sasha and Stinky. Jerry loved living on Whidbey Island. His eccentric personality quickly became known on the island as he ‘played’ his way through the remaining years of his life. He joined the BMW motorcycle group of Washington and the Rod and Gun Club in Langley. Jerry learned to play the guitar and sang for his friends with the skill of an accomplished musician. Bob Dylan was his musical inspiration during his youth, but as he aged, his style emulated BB King and the Blues. Jerry loved fly-fishing in the local lakes and rivers and hunting pheasant in Skagit County. His concern for people was his greatest trait as evidenced by the life he lived and the people who love him. Jerry is leaving behind his beloved wife Choy, loving aunt and cousins and dear friends. Jerry peacefully passed on November 3, 2012 at Enso House in Freeland after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. No memorial is planned as per Jerry’s request. A 37-gun salute was conducted on Sunday following Jerry’s death by his friends at the Rod and Gun Club. This nod would’ve been highly enjoyed by Jerry and the toast that proceeded. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Enso House in Freeland or to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
