It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our father, Carl Bruno (Carlo Rocco Bruno). Carl passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2026. This world lost a truly phenomenal man. He was more than just a “good one”, he was our rock, our anchor, and our biggest supporter. We will miss him more than words can ever say.
Born in Chicago on January 13, 1944, to Gaetano and Philomena Bruno, Carl was raised with a deep appreciation for family, loyalty, and hard work. He is survived by the love of his life, Arlene Bruno, with whom he shared 56 beautiful years of marriage. They filled their lives with love, laughter, open doors, crowded tables, and friendships that have endured the test of time. Many of those dear friends had walked beside them even longer than their marriage itself — a testament to the deep bonds, chosen family, and beautiful life they created together. His commitment to his friends and family was absolute. He lovingly took care of Arlene, with tireless devotion, until he could no longer physically do so.
As a father, Carl was a constant, powerful presence. He was the proud Dad of Rob (Julie) Bruno and Carlene (Deidre) Bruno. He went the extra mile for his kids—quite literally—driving 20 hours straight to Florida every year to give his family unforgettable vacations. He was the undisputed best cook in the house. He always knew exactly how to care for us. He famously brewed the absolute best hot tea to warm us up whenever we would go ice skating. Carl’s legacy of love continues through his grandchildren, Dominick, Isabella, and Gianna Bruno. He was a doting and playful "Grand-paw-ther" to Emma Bruno and Rocco Bruno, as well as to the many loyal four-legged companions who brought joy to his life and who surely greeted him at the Rainbow Bridge.
A man of diverse skills and a strong work ethic, Carl devoted over 25 years to his career as a professional printer for Service Web Offset. He was a local entrepreneur who owned and operated two successful video stores, Mega Video, and remained deeply invested in his community through many years of coaching youth baseball.
Many might be surprised by the sheer breadth of Carl's talents and passions. He was an avid fisherman, dedicated golfer, seasoned hunter, talented painter, attentive photographer, bird watcher who possessed a bird feeder with app notifications, and an all-around massive Chicago sports fan; loyal through every high and low. He possessed a relentless and restless spirit that never gave up on experiencing new things. In his 70’s, he embarked on a whole new adventure. Becoming an avid camper, with a well-stocked kitchen, he embraced the peace of the great outdoors and quality time with family. Above all else, Carl absolutely loved the Chicago Blackhawks.
In keeping with Carl's down-to-earth personality and vibrant spirit, we want his celebration of life to truly reflect the casual, joyful man he was. We invite family and friends to join us in honoring him in a casual setting on Saturday, May 30th from 11am to 4pm with a time of reflection beginning at 3PM at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home and Cemetery, Oak Lawn, IL.
If you feel so inclined, we warmly invite you to wear Chicago Blackhawks gear, jerseys, or shirts to the service to pay tribute to his favorite passion.
