I have so many memories of Della. She started at CRT a couple of weeks before me in 1986 and in that short period of time, had earned the respect and admiration of the staff. I quickly learned that she was smart and sassy - wickedly funny - she had a very kind heart underneath her exterior sassy, but no nonsense shell. Della and I became good friends. No matter what you needed - and to be sure if she thought it made no sense, she would tell you - but if you persisted, she would help you make it happen. We talked about life, family, movies, books and so much more.
On the morning of Sept 11, 2001 as I was heading to my office, Della called me into our Manager’s office. A small TV was on and we watched with horror the assault on our nation. We all have our memories of finding out – my memory was shared with Della. We got busy making arrangements to evacuate our offices at Sears Tower. Several days later, after we returned to our office, Della and I walked to Daley Plaza for a Memorial Service. We walked with people from all over the city, everyone walking like zombies in the direction of the Plaza. And, there we stood as representatives of our nation of immigrants, mourning the victims and honoring the heroes, and acknowledging the tapestry of the people who were observing with us. We joined hands – with 2 other people, Della and me each with an unknown person on our side and listened to the repeated chiming of a bell. As we observed I realized that Della was holding my hand so hard that my rings were being crushed into my finger. I looked up and her eyes were closed and tears were running down her face. We grieved together.
We kept up with emails and occasional lunches. Just a few weeks ago, I was going to send her an outrageously funny video. And then I learned that she had passed. The photo is April 1987 and I'm sure she gave the photographer instructions.
May the memory of my amazing friend, Della, be a blessing to all loved her.
