The pillar of her family Doris was kind and loving. She is survived by their children, Ruth (Larry) Slaviero, Delona (Bob) Thurzo, Phil (Leisa) McNamara, late David (survived by Ann) McNamara, and late Timothy (Penny) McNamara. Blessed with 13 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren, cherished by her late sisters, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Doris was born in Chicago and raised in Roseland. Her family moved to Oak Lawn when she was a Sophomore in High School.
In 1956 she met her true love at a gas station. Their first date was at a bowling alley, and then, of course, the roller rink where Dick could skate and dance circles around her. They were married in 1957.
While Dick was in the Army, Doris joined him in Missouri with their 3-month-old son so they could be together. A year later he was transferred to Wisconsin where their second child was born. In 1959 they moved back to Oak Lawn when he was honorably discharged. Soon after they bought a house in Crestwood and resided there for 65 years where they raised their 5 children.
Doris was a dedicated stay at home mom raising her family, while juggling tight budgets and busy schedules. Dick and Doris were a team that supported each other while providing for their children’s future.
Her entire life Doris was a caregiver, she cared for her children, her parents, and many family members. She went above and beyond to help wherever she was needed. Doris had a beautiful smile that lit up her face, and you knew you were loved.
Dick and Doris knew the importance of bringing their children to church to learn about God, the source of their strength and joy. Doris enjoyed teaching Sunday School, caring for the babies in the nursery along with having a strong presence with Pioneer Girls and the teen choir.
Their children were blessed by having parents who were incredibly involved in their lives. The grandchildren and great grandchildren were always thrilled to have them come to their many activities. It was a blessing to have them around for so many years.
These love birds were absolutely committed to each other for 65 years. They are now back together in Heaven holding hands.
