Gary P. Mattson

Gary P. Mattson, age 66 of Merrionette Park, passed away June 22, 2021. Loving husband to Deborah (nee Rasmussen) of forty-one-years; caring father of Michelle “Micky” (Jonathan) Higgins and Ashley (Derek) Olsen; cherished Grandpa of Patrick “PJ” Higgins, Lillian “Lily” Olsen, Ryan Higgins, and Penelope “Penny” Olsen; devoted son of the late Leroy and Dorothy Mattson; dear brother of the late Marlene Brennan, Robert Mattson, Bonnie Morrisroe and Daniel Mattson; fond uncle to many nieces and nephews; and proud Local 703 teamster for 28 years where he was fondly known as “Blu” by life-long friend James McAleenan.

As he would often say, his family was his greatest accomplishment. This was evident in the way he fondly told old stories of the trips him and Debbie would take early in their relationship, the way he cared so deeply for “his girls” and in the way he had a special relationship with each grandchild. From making sure to always have a stash of candy ready when PJ would come for a visit, the pride and joy he had for Lily being a “supermodel” and declaring himself her unofficial manager, the pure excitement he had after “Ryno” became a player for the Cubs for his local little-league team, to reading all the books brought to him by Penny and answering her favorite question, “What happened to your money Grandpa?” while watching his stocks.

While he is gone in this life he will live on through the love and memories of his family and friends.

Visitation from 3-8pm on Monday, June 28. Funeral prayers at 10:30 am at Chapel Hill Gardens South

Funeral Home, 11333 S. Central Ave. to St. Christina Church for Mass at 11:30 am on Tuesday, June 29.

Cremation will be private.
