Born on December 1, 1933, Ramon grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa, where his natural curiosity and mechanical abilities began to take shape. Starting his career as an apprentice auto mechanic, he went on to dedicate his working years to his trade as a skilled diesel mechanic and lifelong union member. Hardworking, and gifted with his hands, Ramon was the kind of man who could fix anything. Whether working on cars, tending his garden, or tackling a project around the house, he found great satisfaction in understanding how things worked and tackling any “fix it” project.
One of the most meaningful chapters of Ramon’s life began when he met a young waitress named Barbara at a local diner. That chance meeting blossomed into a remarkable love story spanning 71 years of marriage. Ramon was a loving and protective husband, and his enduring partnership with Barbara was the foundation of the family they cherished.
Ramon and Barbara raised their four children, Brad, Tom, Russ, and Liz, primarily in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, with several years spent in Phoenix, Arizona, during the 1970s. Throughout his life, Ramon worked hard to provide for his family and took great pride in being part of the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Quiet-mannered and reserved, Ramon possessed a gentle, peaceful nature and a sense of humor that was uniquely his own. He was endlessly inquisitive and never lost his desire to learn. His mechanical talents were matched by an enthusiasm for modern technology. Even at 92, Ramon was shopping on Amazon, ordering food online, and making use of his Ring doorbell. His willingness to embrace new things was a wonderful reflection of his curious mind and independent spirit.
Above all, Ramon’s greatest joy was his family. Affectionately known as Papa, he was a wonderful grandfather whose love and steady presence meant so much to his grandchildren. Mimi and Papa’s house was a special place where generations gathered, memories were made, and the simple pleasure of being together was treasured. Those moments became part of the lasting legacy he and Barbara created.
Ramon’s love was often expressed through quiet devotion, hard work, and simply being there for those who mattered most. He found happiness in the life he built with Barbara, the family they raised, and the generations that followed. For Ramon, family was not just an important part of life—it was the heart of everything.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 71 years, Barbara; his children, Brad (Pam), Tom (Claudia), Russ (Ivette), and Liz (Dan); and his many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ramon was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Geneva; his brothers, Robert and Ronald; and his beloved grandson, David.
Though his quiet presence will be deeply missed, Ramon’s legacy lives on in the family he loved so dearly, the memories made at Mimi and Papa’s house, and the generations who will forever carry a part of him in their hearts.
A life defined by quiet strength, enduring love, and devotion to family. A legacy that will live on for generations.
Cremation will take place, followed by a private graveside service. Arrangements are being handled by Chapel Hills Gardens South Funeral Home.
