Age 74, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023 in Fresno, CA.
Kathy was born January 17, 1949 in Romulus, Michigan to Edwin Ernest Popert, Jr. and Vera Elizabeth (Rinke) Popert. The family moved to California in the early 1950’s along with her siblings, Ronald, Gerry and Patrice Popert. They eventually settled in Simi Valley, CA.
Kathy graduated Simi Valley High School in 1967 and attended Moorpark Junior College. She spent most of her adult life living in Simi Valley until she retired and moved to the Sierra.
Kathy married Forrest “Butch” Burrell-Marlin Updike, Jr. in Simi Valley, in October, 1968. They divorced several years later. Kathy married a 2nd time to William “Bill” Julius Weber in the 1980s. They also parted ways, divorcing about a decade later.
Kathy worked for the Simi Valley probation office, Ventura County courthouse, and the remainder of her career as a legal secretary.
Kathy enjoyed playing (and dealing) cards for non-profit events. She enjoyed trips to Las Vegas. She also was surprisingly handy doing her own home remodeling work. She would paint, roof, install her own plumbing and lighting fixtures, and more. She was happy gardening, tending to her beautiful flowers. She was also a talented seamstress and loved animals, especially her dog, “Bella”, and many other dogs and cats over the years.
Kathy was strong, determined, and resourceful. She could also be silly wanting to make others laugh. She had a great love for her family, friends and animals. She also was generous and had a heart of gold. She would help anyone in need to the best of her ability.
Kathy is survived by her daughter Susanne Marie Waite and son, Jon Edwin Updike, both of Coarsegold, CA, and Patrice Marie (Popert) Tignac, of Simi Valley and Gerald Popert of North Carolina. Her nieces and nephews, Patricia and Anastasia Popert and Robert “Chad” Owens. She is predeceased by her parents.
A graveside service will be held at Oakhill Cemetery in Oakhurst, CA on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. led by Pastor Nick Carey of the Grove. Immediately following, Dutch treat lunch will be held at Ducey’s Grill in Bass Lake.
Kathy will be missed by her family and friends. However, we know she is in Heaven watching over us.
