It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Cheryl Travis-Johnson, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend. Cheryl was born in Oakland, California, in 1961 to William and Bobbie Travis. The fourth of five children, she is lovingly remembered by her siblings Lawrence Travis, William Jr. Travis and Carol Travis, and preceded in death by her brother Eldrich Travis.
Cheryl's life was marked by her unwavering strength, generosity, and live for her family. She leaves behind her husband David Johnson, her cherished son Justin Crawford, and five adored grandchildren Ayden, MillyAna, Adiana Crawford, IIana Crawford, and Autumn Frost, who will forever carry her warmth, wisdom, and spirit in their hearts,
A proud graduate of Mills College and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Cheryl exemplified excellence, service, and sisterhood throughout her life. She later earned both her MBA and Doctorate of Business Administration in Leadership from Walden University, completing her doctorate in 2018, a reflection of her tireless pursuit of growth and achievement.
Cheryl dedicated over 30 years to advancing the housing and mortgage industry, culminating in her role as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of VRM Mortgage Services, where she helped shape the company's vision and impact for more than 15 years. Before joining VRM, she held senior leadership roles at major institutions, including Freddie Mac., where she earned multiple Premier Achievement Awards. Cheryl's leadership was marked by innovation, integrity, and a deep commitment to expanding homeownership and financial empowerment in underrepresented communities, leaving an indelible mark on the industry and the countless lives she touched.
Beyond her professional success, Cheryl was deeply devoted to her family, her faith, and her community. She led financial literacy sessions for women through her church, helping others build confidence and achieve financial stability. To those who know her best, she was a source of strength wisdom, and unconditional love, an amazing mother, wife, and mentor whose generosity and grace enriched every life she encountered.
After leaving California, Cheryl made her home in Texas, where she spent the past 30 years surrounded by the people and places she loved. Her warmth, brilliance, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who had a privilege to know her
Internment will be held Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Rolling Hills memorial park
