I met Dominique in 2024 at the 12th National Conference of African-American Librarians in New Orleans. She was so sweet and kind. We went to a group dinner at an Ethiopian place and she talked so passionately about her work and Black librarianship. Once I started following her on Instagram I could see how much she loved the work she did and her people. She will be so missed. Sending love and support to her family, friends and everyone who she impacted. I will never forget her.

Fancy was one of my best friends and she encouraged me to get my associates and bachelors degrees. Throughout our friendship she always showed up and supported me and I made sure to do the same. Thank you to the family for welcoming me with open arms. I love you all and I am here whenever you need me.

For those who may not know me, my name is Nicole Hornage, and I’m Dominique’s cousin.

Dominique was the daughter of my dad’s sister, my aunt Annette aka Maria, but to me Dominique was so much more than just a cousin. She was my partner in crime from an early age. A family member I was related to by chance, but  friends by choice. She was the one person who truly understood just how crazy our family really is.

My cousins were my first friends before I even started elementary school. For 28 years, Dominique and I were the only two girl cousins amongst the boys—Danny, Drew, and Pierre—before Cali came along

I have so many fond memories with Dominique from childhood all the way through adulthood. From swinging at parks like Edison, Sandborn, Krusi, and Washington… to me teaching her the monkey bars and accidentally scraping her face while helping her flip over a bar at Lake Merritt.

We even played on the same basketball team in high school. Yes, Dominique played basketball—but she pretty much quit after almost every practice if we had to run miles on the track or do too many suicides. The funny part was she still had to wait for me after practice so we could catch the bus or get a ride home together, and the next day she’d show up again like nothing ever happened.

One summer we didn’t work at all. Instead, we walked around Lake Merritt and climbed what we called the “stairs of death,” which I later learned are actually called Cleveland Cascade. Somehow we managed to collect $10 a day from family members so we could split a $5 footlong and get gas money so I could drive her to apply for jobs at Southland Mall. Eventually she started working at Bath & Body Works… though somehow I never received any candles or body spray. 

Over the years we shared so many memories….

Dominique was once-in-a-life-time colleague ! She was always supportive, caring, kind, full of positive energies, insightful, wise, and thriving to continuing learning and growing.  She was a joy to be around!

Dominique will be greatly missed! And she'll forever live in my heart and memories.

It was a great delight and privilege to work with Dominique and to get to know her. She was inspirational and will forever be a role model, an angel, and a Bodhisattva  to me. Like one of our colleagues said, I want to be like her!  Thank you, Dominique, for being who you are!

Dominique was presenting at the California Academic and Research Libraries (CARL) conference in San José, CA, in April 2024. I took this picture of her when she was presenting her research and shared it with her afterwards. She was brilliant, kind, fun, outgoing, radiant, and an amazing joy to be around. She will be missed. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Aruba 2019. She surprised me at the Newark Airport so we could fly in together. She was always making things special. I’ll remember this trip and this rum tasting forever.

She inspired and changed so many lives. I will remember her like this forever- smiling, celebrating her wins, encouraging others to have fun and thrive.

There are no words for the loss of a child. I’m so sorry.  Dominique’s beautiful smile and spirit will live on with everyone who knew her. Cherish the laughs and memories. Continued prayers and healing to the family 🌹

I'm going to miss you so much. You went from being one of my colleagues to being a friend and I appreciate you so much for the energy and vibes you brought to me. 

I especially will miss the way you brighten up my day with new ideas,  learning about all the amazing things you are doing and the way you ask "Is there a policy or procedure?" for everything

I count myself lucky for being in your presence. I miss you so much.

I will always remember Dominique by her smile, and her laugh. Her mom gave me so many rides home after late basketball practices and games and Dominique used to crack up every time I ran up the steps and into the unlocked door. It was an event, even more so on the rare occasion the front door was actually locked. Such a wonderful, infectious, deep, full bodied laugh. We bonded playing basketball, in drama class, riding AC transit from Oakland to Alameda and never hesitating to risk being late to school to grab a smoothie from Jamba Juice. It is truly a privilege to have known and been friends with Dominique. As adults, I admired her passion for pursuing her educational dreams, her love of her family, her love of travel, and how she always celebrated life's events. 

The last things Dominique wrote in my senior yearbook were to remember her by her smile and to lock my front door. Rest in paradise friend.

Words are insufficient to describe the loss of life, the grief and pain of loved ones who have seen their beloved pass beyond this moment and time. It is my most sincere intention and prayer that all who will miss Dominique will find in their hearts and minds moments where she was just glowing with joy and contentment, where she shared plans and pursuits to further her education, professional aspirations, travels and moments with family. I remember and will always hold Dominique's smile in my mind for she was one of the few people with whom I had the privilege of collaborating and working-learning from at Santa Clara University who truly expressed toward me compassion and care during difficult moments in my life. Dominique once shared with me that "All in God's time comes; trust the process and verbalize it into being." Such was her affirmation, which I will forever hold as a reminder of her faith, compassion and loving-kindness .

Dominique brought the sunshine to every interaction I had with her. From being Amtrak train buddies from Hayward to Santa Clara, to teaching our Sociology students how to do library research, to sharing time together on the Women of Color Retreat last spring, she was always a joy to be around. I will miss her smile and sense of humor.

I am so sad to hear of Dom’s passing.  We played basketball together our Jr year.  I never returned to Encinal after, but we have always kept in touch throughout the years and shared our love for traveling.  She had a beautiful soul and smile that could light up the darkest room.  She was always so kind.  My condolences to the family for your loss.

Since the day she walked in the salon we became instant friends. She was one of those people you love to see coming because she brings so much joy and positive energy. We bonded over our love for Oakland, education, our birthdays (which is a day a part), and plants. My life is better because she was a part of it and I love her forever. There’s nothing quite like Dominique’s enthusiasm and smile to make you just want to jump on a project with her. She really just made you believe you could do anything. The library won’t be the same without you.

It’s funny how work is no longer “work” when you’re literally just hanging out with your friends all day, talking about things you’re so passionate about (libraries).

This girl is one of my day ones, and forever grateful of her beautiful soul inside and out. I’m still in disbelief and truly heartbroken. Dominique was our LEAD program librarian. I remember her being such a ray of light and always smiling. I was so sad to hear about her passing. She was so bubbly and just such a kind soul.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Dominique. I was serving on a California Academic Research Libraries committee with her planning this year's CARL conference.  Dominique was a wonderful, warm, and kind colleague. I know I speak for us all in the library world when I say she will be so missed. Rest in paradise.
