To the Tatman - Thomas Family, 

Aunt Melinda and I had the privilege of being named after her mother and my great grandmother, Melinda.  Aunt Melinda and I also shared a birthday, December 20th which made sharing our name even more special. There’s a scripture which says that as Christians, we don’t always have to use words to minister to others, sometimes it’s just living right before them that provides a testimony that words can’t adequately express. Her life was an example to me even if most of it was from afar - California to Louisiana. I remember as a college student, visiting her home for the first and only time. She and Uncle Welton, not only welcomed me but also the 3 strangers that I brought along, 1 of whom became my husband.  There was so much I learned in that single visit that inspired me to be more and do more, being a property owner, offering hospitality. Most of our connections were on Louisiana soil, this picture represents our last in-person encounter, I’m grateful that it was captured. She was so significant in my life, a quiet strength, a calming voice, a constant presence.  Because of all she was to me in her lifetime, I will miss her.  

I think about how much more she had to mean to all of you in California who were part of her everyday moments. I also think about the great legacy that she’s left with you/us, a long-lasting legacy - a model of courage, faith and family. It had to take such courage to  travel far away to plant seed in new soil and it had to take faith and a love for family to stay connected to those far away.

May her legacy and her example keep us connected.

Special memories of my beautiful, classy great aunt. I am always reminded my name was chosen by you. I may have been a little girl, but I will forever remember my first train ride from Texas to California, to see you. When you would visit Texas,  there never a limit to accommodate you. You were treated like the queen you were!! We will love you forever, and miss you until the end of time.

I remember Aunt Melinda’s beautiful smile and sweet disposition - so loving.  I always felt joyful to be in her presence.  She has gone from labor to reward!  Praying God’s comfort and peace for the family.  

I will miss her grande smile and kind words of encouragement that she always was willing to share.  I will forever hold a special place in my heart for Aunt Melinda. RIP!
