His presence may be gone, but the legacy of family he helped create continues through them.

Paul’s story reminds us that family ties don’t dissolve with distance or death. They live on in memory and in the moments that resurface when everyone gathers again. Today, as we say goodbye, may we also remember that love doesn’t end here. It continues, silently through the people he left behind and the lessons he leaves within each heart that knew him.

To his children, and to every family member feeling the weight of this loss, we send our prayers and deepest sympathy. May peace find you in time, may memories bring you comfort, and may love in its purest form keep guiding you forward.

Today, we gather to honor and remember the life of Paul Shumate, a man whose story, like all of ours, was made of both light and shadow. Though his path took him many miles from home, the bond he shared with family never faded. It lived quietly in the background — through the laughter remembered, in the stories retold, and in the roots begun right here.

In his honor, we bring forth a peace lily embellished with six roses, one for each of his beloved siblings: Doris, Sheree, Ruby, Georgia, George, and Darlene. Together, they stand as symbols of family imperfections. The peace lily reminds us that even through life’s hardest seasons, peace can still bloom. Its roots stretch deep, its leaves remain steady, and its flowers reach upward — just as we do today, searching for strength and understanding.

The six roses resting within the lily represent the bond between Paul and his siblings, a connection that distance and time could never erase. Each rose holds its own meaning: laughter shared, lessons learned, memories that shaped who each of them became. Family may not always walk the same road, but the roots remain intertwined beneath the surface, holding strong where love first began.
And then there’s 5942 Cote Brilliante, a place that will forever carry the weight and warmth of your shared story. That house wasn’t just an address; it was a foundation. Within those walls were the sounds of siblings growing up, the smell of dinners cooking, the joy and chaos that filled each room. It was where the concept of love was first learned, where Paul, and all of you, took pieces of home that would stay in your hearts no matter where life carried you.

Beyond being a brother and a son, Paul was also a father and a grandfather; roles that added new branches to the family tree. Though every story has its challenges, what remains are the moments of pride and the pieces of love that live on through his children and grandchildren.

Paul Shumate,  we met when we where both down on our luck but we became the best of friends, @ times we were inseparable-when you saw 1, you saw the other, we had a lot of fun together.  We would take train rides to SF, (which is where I met Sonya ( Queen Sassy) @ Pier 39 I believe she had or was about to finish high school, lunch dates @ Round Table pizza downtown Palo Alto, helped me shop @ Stanford Shpg . Ctr. and when Stanford University hired me he would come to my location on Campus, many many days we traveled on public transportation, Paul and I where everywhere/ the list goes on and on.  All I had to do was call/wait for him “ to tie his shoes” and we’re “off to the races”-my heart is heavy but I know my friend is RIP, until we meet again Paul.
