Beryl Miranda Victoria Sutherland was born on October 9, 1929 in Guyana, South America. She was the fifth of ten children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sergeant Lawrence Augustus and Christina Regina Tappin.
As a child, she was a member of St. Andrews Scots Church. She attended St Stephens Scots Primary School and Corentyne High School. At 18 years of age, Beryl accepted a teaching position at the Wellington Park Scots School. She graduated from Guyana Teacher’s Training College.
In 1953, Beryl married Solomon Josiah Nelson. That union produced four children; Bernadette, Trevor, Ian and Desiree. As young school teachers, Solomon and Beryl traveled to remote areas of Guyana teaching primary, secondary and adult students. In 1958 Beryl joined the Campbellsville Government School systems. Later, she became the assistant Head Mistress at Craig Government School. Her dear husband, Solomon, passed away in 1965, and soon after Beryl and her children immigrated to the United States. In 1972, Beryl joined the Board of Education for the City of New York as a school teacher. By 1980, she had obtained a Masters Degree in Education and was promoted to Assistant Principal. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1995.
Beryl met Charles Beresford Sutherland in 1994 and they were united in marriage on February 25, 1995. Together, they relocated to Ocala, Florida and became members of Grace Presbyterian Church. Beryl and Charles thoroughly enjoyed their retirement. They traveled, enjoyed cruises and spent time with family and friends. In her final years, she was taken care of by her devoted husband. Beryl lived a long and fulfilling life.
Beryl leaves to mourn her passing, her loving husband, Charles; children, Bernadette Nelson, Trevor (Kathy) Nelson, Ian (Curlene) Nelson, and Desiree (William James) Nelson; grandchildren Leona, Deana, Trevor Jr., Tiffanie, Terence, William, Melissa, Gregory; and a host of great grand-children, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
