Hyacinth McGhie was born on March 9, 1940, in St. Ann, Jamaica, West Indies, to Herbert Taylor and Sarah Matthews. She was one of 16 siblings. Hyacinth is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 56 years, Alvin McGhie, and her brother, Vasil Taylor. Hyacinth moved from St Ann to Kingston at a young age where she eventually met her Husband, Alvin. Hyacinth and Alvin were married November 28, 1962, and was blessed with two sons, Ripton and Gregory “Dave”. In 1967 Hyacinth migrated to the United States as a domestic worker. In 1968 she was joined by her husband, Alvin. They resided in Brooklyn for a short while before moving to Queens, then finally settling in Hempstead, NY (Long Island).
Hyacinth was fondly known as “Cherry” to close friends and family. She loved to travel, cook, entertain guests, and SHOP. She was known as a bargain hunter. Hyacinth loved being well dressed and routinely wore hats to Sunday service. Her home was always filled with all kinds of delicious smells, family laughing, and helping to prepare meals. She would make lots of food and would say she’s making enough in case anyone stopped by. Hyacinth worked in geriatric care at the Long Island Jewish Hospital for many years. She was also a homemaker and hairdresser. She kept her salon in her home, and she was the “family hair dresser”. Upon retirement, Hyacinth moved to Ocala, FL with her Husband, Alvin. They became very active in the community, and church.
She leaves behind to morn, her Sons: Ripton and Gregory (Dave); Daughters-in-law: Nelda and Raquel; Grandchildren: Christopher, Justin, Stephanie, Nathaniel, and Gregory; Great-Granddaughter: Melani; Sisters: Yvonne; Rachel; Madge; Paulette; and Karleen Matthews; Thelma, Joyce-Linda, Edna Taylor; Brothers: Lenworth and Godfrey (Tony) Matthews; Owen, Glaston, “Little Man”, and Laselle Taylor; Brothers-in-law: Stanley Meggie, John Murphy, Hopeton Williams, and Cecil Campbell; Sisters-in-law: Barbara Matthews and Sonia (Pat) Taylor; Nieces: Novelette; Felicia; Tishana; Jasmine; Georgina; Tasha; Meisha, Nicole, Jean, Suzan Suzette, Odette, Antonette, , Nakia, Bev, Cecille, Deion Avis (Annette); Linnette (Lin); Narisse; Camille; and Careen; Nephews: Kevin, Daquan, Andre, Matthew, Bobby, Errol, Vinroy, Tama , Patrick, Kingsley, Winston and El-worth, George, Auvil (Derrick), and Linton. She also leaves behind countless other nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
