John attended Thirkell Elementary School, St. Theresa Middle School and Graduated from Cass Technical High School, in Detroit, Michigan. After graduation, John continued to pursue his education at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
In 1988, John joined the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) supporting the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). It was also during this time he would meet his future wife and love of his life, Sheila Terry. In 1992, John left the IRS and began his career with Ford Motor Company. He retired in 2005 after sustaining a debilitating work-related injury.
On June 24, 2006, John was joined in holy matrimony to Sheila and became step-father to Michael. To this union, one child was born, Reyna Michelle. John was a loving husband and devoted father. He was ever-present in Michael and Reyna’s upbringing. From being their teacher/tutor, coach, mentor, chauffer and confidant, he focused on rearing respectful, well-rounded, and self-sufficient children, who grew into caring and productive adults. John integrated arts, sciences, sports, and traveling into Michael and Reyna’s education and life experiences, along with a special emphasis on their own history and culture. In June of 2021, John relocated the family home from Woodhaven, Michigan to Ocala, Florida.
In addition to his family, John had two other great loves, music and sports. With a collection of over 500 CDs, multiple unlimited digital music subscriptions and dozens of vinyl records, Friday night “jam sessions” were a regular occurrence at the Bogins residence. While John enjoyed all music genres and most artists, his favorite musician was Prince. He was fortunate enough to see Prince in concert, after-shows and other live settings numerous times and in various states throughout the country. Likewise, there was no local, collegiate, or professional sports that were off limits however, no other athletic organization held a candle to the University of Michigan Football Team. A Michigan Man, through and through he truly believed “It’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine, Go Blue!”
John made a point not to wait on great moments to happen but to create them every chance he got. He always enjoyed a good joke and the laughter it would bring, and he recognized the value of life, making a point to frequently celebrate it with his siblings, “chosen family” and friends. Whether on a trip with the family, catching a comedy show or simply watching Good Times, The Jeffersons or Sanford & Son reruns, John truly enjoyed the life he had made.
Over the years, John developed a strong and meaningful relationship with God, and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He attended services at Third New Hope Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, integrating the word and scripture into his daily devotion and outlook on life.
