John started his medical practice about the same time I started my Financial Services practice in Fort Wayne. What I quickly discovered when I called upon him of offer financial planning services was an MD very open to meeting with me and eager to get a program started. This seemed unusual . . . until I learned that he had sold life insurance for the same company before he graduated from medical school . . . which made the pieces fit more understandably. John's understanding of insurance underwriting allowed me to use his medical exames for larger cases and get them approved more quickly becausee he knew the process the client had to go through. As his family grew, John was always responsible and loved his family and the practice of medicine.

John was a special guy that I am glad I got to meet and know. Like my career, John's took some turnes into new areas that brought about challenges, but his underlying character was always to serve others as best he could . . . that's the trait of a man gladly serving the Lord. I'm sure Jesus was smiling when he met John in heaven, gave him a big hug and thanked him for fighting through his personal issues and showing his family and community that with God's help, others can do it!

The Smith's will always be part of my childhood memories, starting with Jason & Jessica riding our pony, T-Bone. Going to the fair and camping. Jason often went with us and was a bit of the brother I never had. Please tell Jason, Jessica, and Jackie hello for me and i would enjoy speaking with Jason again, maybe he can email me:

JP was my boss for a number of years at Parkview. He was tough at times but a great mentor, always challenging me to be better. He was compassionate and loved his children so very much. His humor was special and he seemed to always be able to bring out the best in everyone he encountered. I am thankful to him for giving so much of his knowledge and wisdom and helping me to be successful. Lovely to read so many people's memories and know that true happiness finally found him. Thank you JP for giving me the appreciation of "statistical significance " and being my friend.

We knew John as a fellow worshiper at Covenant United Methodist Church in Ft. Wayne, IN. Our children were older than Jason & Jessica, but we spent many hours with Jason as he developed a love for our horses. Our pony, T-bone, eventually went to live with the Smith's for awhile, and it was especially fun to be involved with delivering him as a Christmas present, sleigh bells and all.

We had lost contact with the Smith family in recent years, but are heartened to know that John found peace, happiness, and purpose in the years after retirement.

Absolutely loved this man. He was my doctor from 1976 until he went to Parkview. I was thrilled when he returned to his practice so I could continue with him until he retired from it. He was so kind and compassionate. He always spent as much time with me as I needed. RIP Dr. Smith.

We were shocked and saddened to read of John's passing. What good memories we had at the lake. Your house is on the Holiday walk on Saturday and those of us that are helping do our tour of the decorated houses tonight. I will be thinking of you as I go through it.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family in this very tough time.

Blessings, Larry & Donna Seiler

Dr. Smith was my Dr. for several years. He was so kind and compassionate. I was having a really hard time emotionally and as soon as he got in the exam room and saw I was crying he sat down and hugged me. That was 15 years ago and I still remember how that hug made me feel. He was a wonderful Dr.

I was just fresh from Residency when I met JP. I was so lucky to be able to join the group then known as Lake Avenue Physicians when they decided to take a chance and hire their first female colleague. Working with JP ( and all of them ) was an honor and a pleasure. I will always remember his casual friendly style of practice , his easy smile, and wicked sense of humor. Integrity, compassion, dedication, many adjectives describe him. He will be missed

I had a great opportunity to work for and with JP during his leadership at Parkview Health. I appreciated his encouragement and his direction. I really appreciated his tenacity and his great sense of humor. He was working on developing his golf game by going very early every morning to play at Cedar Creek, before he came to work. One day, he proudly announced that he was moving forward by purchasing some top-notch golf clubs, saying that professional golfers could hit any "piece of crap" golf club and make it look good but we duffers really needed the help of great equipment. Rest in peace, JP, with so many jobs well done.
