"I Did It My Way"

Sylvia Roach was born on July 5th, 1936 in Ashdeane Village, Barbados. Her parents are Percival Holder and Millicent Roach. She was the Eldest of Four children Clotell, Grace, and Derrick Roach. Sylvia was baptized on September 10, 1936 at James Street Methodist Church in the parish of St. Michael Barbados.

She married her first husband William Brathwaite on April 14, 1956 and became a mother of six children Beverly, Stephen, Earnest, Orma, Margaret, and Oscar Brathwaite. While living in Barbados she worked gathering Shrimp, cleaning fish, and cooking for the fisherman at sea. She was a self-taught individual. She purchased her first car and taught herself how to drive, people would see her flying cross town and new it was her. She was proud of that accomplishment but wanted more out of live.

In order to make a better life for her and her family she immigrated to the United States in 1967. With hard work and determination, she was able to have her family join her within in three years. As a single parent she had to find a way to support her family; she was never a stranger to hard work. She worked nights and went to school during the day and became a nurse’s aide.

What Sylvia installed in her children was hard work, strength, religion, and determination. She delighted in watching her children become parents. Sylvia had her challenges and hardships. However, she was a Faithful woman of God. Often you would hear her singing Gospel, praying and having studies with her church family. She valued being a part of the “Church of Christ”; they were her family. God was her everything, she attended church every Sunday and gave her time and offering. Her voice of melody would echo throughout the house as she sung her Gospel. Being grounded in her faith kept her happy and full of life. “She did it Her Way”.

Sylvia and Vincent Henry both worked in the health care industry. On September 9,1985 they were married in Babylon New York and lived in Amityville New York for many years. He was all that she could hope for; he was a loving husband and a great grandfather to her grandchildren. She enjoyed quality time with family, she was always prepared for the unexpected visits from family. In 1986 they purchased their first piece of land in Ocala Florida and eventually relocated to her To Marion County. Her children later Followed. She planted herself in a church home where she fellow ship with Pastor Jeff Robinson under the “Maricamp Church of Christ”. Sylvia was great at Sewing, knitting and cooking; she shared her passion with both Family and church members. She tagged her signature of creation on blankets, vest, hats, baby Christening gowns, and clothing’s with “Love from Sylvia”.

Sylvia is survived by her Five Children Beverly, Stephen, Orma, Margaret, and Oscar Brathwaite. Her grandchildren Nelson Perez; Sergio St. Michael; Jacklyn Ferro; Ometa James; Jenna Ferro; Pearl Fox; Oscar Brathwaite Jr.; Richard Fox; and Yanique Brathwaite. She is also the proud great grandmother of 28 plus grandchildren and more to come.
