Barbara Joyce Gorlin passed away peacefully with her children and her sister at her bedside on February 27th, 2021. She was born Barbara Berger in Brooklyn, NY July 13th, 1934. She moved to Red Bank NJ at the age of 7 and graduated from Red Bank High school, where she was a majorette. She attended Monmouth College, Traphagen School of Design and The Newark State Teachers College. A talented artist. At age six, she won first prize for a mural she painted and was hung at the 1939 World Fair in NY.
Barbara was an active member of her Jewish Community throughout her life. She was Secretary of the Sisterhood at Congregation B’nai Israel in Rumson and a charter member of B’nai Brith of Monmouth County. She was also a charter member of The National Council of Jewish Women and a life member of Hadassah.
A gifted make-up artist, Barbara managed the cosmetics department at Rumson Pharmacy and owned and operated her own business in Deal New Jersey called the Beauty Spot for 18 years. She had specialized training with a product line called Covermark Cosmetics, designed to help cover those with scars and facial disfigurement. She traveled the State for doctors and insurance companies teaching individuals how to use this product.
Barbara was married to Jerry Gorlin, deceased. Barbara is survived by her children daughter Cindy Sherman and her wife Sheryl Goldstein of and grand-daughter Sarah-Jaana Nodell. Her daughter Lisa Sherman and her partner Franke Previte and her grand-daughter Chelsea Dow. Her son Gregg Sherman and his fiance Jeniffer Tierney and her grandchildren Lexi, Ashley and Spencer Sherman. Her sister Beverle Richelson and husband Howard , niece Heather Richelson-Hopkins and husband Chris and Jackson, Taylor and Logan, nephew Ari Richelson and Jessica Harms and Alissa and Anna. There will be a private graveside service on Monday March 1st at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge NJ, Please contact Congregation Torat El Oakhurst New Jersey for virtual Shiva information to be held Tuesday evening March 2nd.
