Bernard Berson

Bernie is survived by his wife Toby, Daughters Lani Berson, Lori (Kevin) Eppel, Cindy (Jay) Rangel, Jill (Jeff Shapiro) Jones, Brother Richard (Linda) Berson, Sister Ellen (Ken) Weiss, and Lenore (Marty) Glaser and his grandchildren, Evan, Jessica, Carly, Mackenzie, Owen, Eli, and Shiloh

Bernie was born and raised in Meriden, Connecticut, the eldest of five children, to Irving and Elsie Berson. He attended the University of Connecticut where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, and earned his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the Newark Institute of Technology. He spent several years in the Coast and Geodetic Survey, then went into private practice as a Civil Engineer. He built his own successful engineering and surveying company, and authored two books. Bernie was recognized for his knowledge, excellence and leadership skills as he was elected to be the President of the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers, and ultimately the President of the National Society of Professional engineers. His biggest goal in those roles was to promote engineering as a career in general, but more specifically promoting women in engineering.

Bernie was not only successful professionally. He lived a full life, admired and loved by so very many people. He and his wife Toby traveled all around the world together, for business and for pleasure. They took their entire family, four daughters and 7 grandchildren on many vacations where they laughed, danced and celebrated all that life had to offer. Family was so important to him, especially his grandchildren. He attended endless dance recitals, plays, football games, soccer games, Tae Kwon Do belt testing and graduations. His grandchildren were the light of his life. Bernie had a quick wit and a fabulous sense of humor. And he was a very loyal person, most notably shown through his love for the Washington Redskins who have failed to win a Super Bowl since 1992. But he had to have been one of their biggest fans ever.

Sadly, Bernie’s final years were challenging for him physically. But his zest for life kept him sharp and in touch with many loved ones. COVID kept him from seeing people in person, but FaceTime and Zoom calls kept the family close and in touch. His entire family rallied around him during his final days, sharing memories and loving thoughts with him. He will be terribly missed by so many. But all will cherish the many great memories of having their lives touched by this very special man.

In lieu of flowers, the family is setting up a scholarship fund at the University of Connecticut for aspiring women in engineering. Details will be shared for anyone interested in donating to that scholarship.
