

Dr. Bernard Pellman Shagan, 90, of Jackson Township, New Jersey, was born on September 29, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, and passed away on June 11, 2026. Bernard will be remembered as a beloved presence in the lives of those who knew him, and with deep respect for the years he lived and the people he held close as well as his patients that he cared for as a physician.
Dr. Shagan earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Maimonides Medical Center. Upon completion of his residency training, he served in the Army from 1966 to 1968 at Madigan Army Medical Center, one of the largest military hospitals on the West Coast, located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. Dr. Shagan joined Monmouth Medical Center’s Medical Staff in 1987 as Chair of Medicine, a post he held until 1995. With more than 65 years of experience in medicine, he brought extensive knowledge to the treatment of complex metabolic conditions and specialized in managing diabetes in older adults.
Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Phoebe; and children Ellen Basch and her husband of Ivan of Lexington, MA; Adam Shagan and his wife of Karolyn of North Middletown, NJ and Brian Shagan and his wife Dana. Four grandchildren Sarah, Hilary, Nathan, and Sam and great grandchildren Andi, Rae, Harrison, and Maxine.
